THE LEAD
The New Haven men's soccer team looks to get back in the win column after falling to the #17 Adelphi Panthers, 3-0, on the road on Tuesday. The loss comes after the Chargers picked up their first win of the season against the Le Moyne Dolphins. Now returning home to Kathy Zolad Stadium for the final homestand of the season, New Haven will host the Bentley Falcons on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 P.M.
SERIES HISTORY VS BENTLEY
This will only be the 19th meeting between the these NE10 programs. The Chargers trail slightly in the all-time series, 6-11-1, despite currently holding a two game win streak over the Falcons. The last time they played was Nov. 3, 2021 when New Haven concluded their regular season with a 4-0 shutout win. The series dates back to Oct. 8, 1997 when the Chargers took the inaugural game with a 3-1 victory over the Falcons. When hosting Bentley at Kathy Zolad Stadium, the Chargers hold a 2-3 record.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (1-8-4)
Following their first win of the 2022 season, the Chargers were blanked by the Adelphi Panthers on Tuesday night. The shutout loss put an end to a two-game streak of the Chargers scoring three goals and is the seventh time the Chargers have been held scoreless this season.
New Haven was outshot by Adelphi, 12-19 (5-8 on goal), while settling for less corner kicks, 6-7, five of which came in the second half. Freshman midfielder Oskar Kvarnback (Stockholm, Sweden/Bromma Gymnasium) led the team with five shots, one of which was on target, while Guillem Barnils (Barcelona, Spain/Escola Pia Nostrasenyora) attempted two total shots. Sean Lane-Turnbull (Wellington, New Zealand/Rongotai College), Tyler Jasinski (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) and Alexander Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands) also attempted a shot on goal while the latter of the three holds the second most shots taken on the team this season.
The team's season shot leader, Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet), who was recently named NE10 Player of the Week after combining for nine points between the last two games, was held to zero shots for the first time since their 2-1 loss to Dominican on Sept. 3.
Lindstrom has been a bright spot for the team this season as he leads the offense with five goals and an assist. Lindstrom has record two multi-goal games, in consecutive games, while starting all 13 of New Haven's games.
Barnils is the only other Charger with multiple goals scored so far this season. He last scored on Sept. 20 in the draw with Assumption, however, he also recorded his first career assist in the team's lone win over Le Moyne.
Sophomore midfielder Chris Chyzowych (Flemington, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) has three points on the year, stemming from a career game against the Saint Rose Golden Knights on Sept. 28 when Chyzowych tallied a goal and an assist in the 3-3 draw. In the same game, junior midfielder Devon Polletta (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional) netted his first career goal, as well. His twin brother, Dante Polletta (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional), recorded an assist on Tyler Pereira's (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven) goal in the team's opening game against the Bridgeport Purple Knights.
Devon also tallied an assist in the team's 5-3 loss to crosstown rival Southern Connecticut, the game in which Lane-Turnbull scored his first career goal. Lindstrom's first two-score game came in the loss but he was monumental in the following game against Le Moyne with another pair of goals. However, it was freshman Lucas Kaehr (Armonk, N.Y./Indiana University High School) who was the hero of the day as he put New Haven up 3-2 with five seconds left in the game with a goal on his first career shot.
Kastoris made his 11th start between the post for the Chargers, allowing three goals while tallying five saves. Kastrois now has 42 saves on the season, which are tied for fifth in the conference while his .712 save percentage ranks ninth.
