The University of New Haven men's basketball outlasted the Assumption Greyhounds, 74-73, on Tuesday night, marking their fifth victory on the season. Graduate guard Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) led the team with a season-high 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting including a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. The win, which was their third straight overall and fifth straight in conference play, marked their tenth win in a row against the Assumption Greyhounds.
With the win over Assumption, the Chargers stay atop of the NE10 standings with a 5-1 conference record as they look to extend their overall win streak into a stretch of non-conference play. The team will finish their home stand by hosting the Bloomfield Bears on Thursday, Dec. 8 before hitting the road again. Tip-off for the eighth game of the season is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.at Charger Gymnasium.
Inside the SeriesÂ
This Thursday marks only the 13th meeting between these out of conference opponents as the Chargers enter with a 8-4 lead in the all-time series. New Haven enters the matchup on a three-game win streak over the Bears, including a 85-80 win in overtime on Feb. 13, 2018. Although the series began in 1964 with the Chargers taking the first three meetings, the last time the two faced off was on Dec. 30, 2018, resulting in a dominant 77-61 victory for the Blue & Gold. Lane is the only remaining Charger from that last meeting as the guard put up seven points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting in his fifth career start.
Scouting the Bears (4-3, 2-0Â CACC)
The Bloomfield Bears finished the 2021-22 regular season with an 10-17 record including a 2-8 record when playing teams outside of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. As voted upon by the league's 13 head coaches in the sport, the Bears were selected fourth in the north division of the CACC with 44 points.
The Bears split a pair of games against NE10 teams to start their season against Saint Rose and Le Moyne at the Saint Rose Tip-Off Tournament. After falling to the Golden Knights 73-84, the Bears rebounded with an 84-73 win over Le Moyne as all five starters reached double-digits.
From there, Bloomfield went 1-2 in their next three games, two of which were on the road. After dropping their match with the Adelphi Panthers, 69-93, the Bears picked up their second win of the season over the University of District of Columbia, defeating the Firebirds, 76-69. The Bloomfield College men's basketball team saw five players reach double-figures again against Bowie State but it was not enough as the Bulldogs claimed an 85-81 victory. The home opening, non-conference battle between the Bears and the Bulldogs was moved to Mark Corino Court at Caldwell University for facility maintenance reasons.
Bloomfield picked up a pair of wins against Alliance and Bridgeport on the road to start off conference play as they enter the matchup on a two-game winning streak.
The Bears offense has run through redshirt sophomore guard Andres Fulgencio, who is coming off a season-high 23 points against Bridgeport. Fulgencio is averaging a team high and 16.1 points per game, ninth most in the conference, as he has made 36-of-73. Of his 36 made field goals, 23 have come from beyond the arc, ranking seventh among CACC scorers who have played 60% of team games and made at least one three per game. The redshirt sophomore also leads the team with 8.4 boards per game, 14 of which have been on the offensive side.
Aside from Fulgencio, the only other Bear to start all seven games this season has been senior forward Josh Morris, who enters the game with 12.3 ppg and 5.4 rpg.
Tyrek Battle-Holley, who leads the team with 12 total assists, has also hit 10+ three-pointers through his first seven games as the senior guard has gone 12-of-25 from distance for a conference fourth-best 48 3PT percentage. Sophomore forward Wesley Robinson, who has started in three of his six appearances, rounds out the double-digit scorers for Bloomfield as he averages 10.2 per game incluign a 24 point performance in the team's season-opener against Saint Rose.
On defense, Fulgencio, Battle-Holley and Al Fatir Connor have all come away with six steals while Fulgencio and sophomore forward Edward Ngene have swatted away six shots each. The Bears have yielded 79.1 points per game to their opponents while holding them to a conference four-best 44.2 shooting percentage. Led by Fulgencio, the team also averages 37.4 boards per game for a +5.4 rebounding margin.
Through seven games, Bloomfield has scored an average of 77.4 points per game, fourth in the conference, while shooting 45.2 percent from the floor, 36.7 percent from beyond the arc, and 64.9 percent from the line.Â
The 2022-2023 basketball season marks head coach Gerald Holmes' twenty-first year guiding the Bloomfield College Men's Basketball program. He is the longest tenured coach at the college and his reign at the helm of the Bears has seen his teams become one of the preeminent powers in the East Region and a perennial contender for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament Championship.Â
Scouting the Chargers (5-2, 5-1Â NE10)
The Chargers enter the matchup on a three-game win streak after foiling an Assumption comeback attempt in a 74-73 win on Tuesday night. The win, which was their third straight overall and fifth straight in conference play, marked their tenth win in a row against the Assumption Greyhounds. With the victory over Assumption, the Chargers stay atop of the NE10 standings with a 5-1 conference record as they look to extend their overall win streak into a stretch of non-conference play.
Leading the Chargers on the night with a 19 points was Lane, who has scored 10+ points in every game to start the season. The graduate guard set a season-high by making eight of his ten field goal attempts including a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Lane also racked up six assists in the win as he now ranks third in the conference with 4.3 per game, following fellow guard Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial High School), who ranks second with 4.4. Olawoye reached double figures for the second time this season, making four field goals to finish the game with 13 points as well as eight rebounds and five assists.
In addition to Lane, Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton) has also scored 10+ points in every game this season, trailing close behind him with 17 points. After shooting 7-of-12 on Tuesday, Perry is currently ranked fifth in the Northeast-10 with an average of 16.4 points per contest. One of Perry's made baskets was an electrifying dunk to put the Chargers up by 16.Â
Majur Majak's (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./) streak of double-digit rebounds came to an end at four games but the big man still pulled in eight boards to go along with nine points, three of which came from the line. Majak continues to lead the team and the NE10 with a 77.1Â percent shooting percentage after finishing 3-of-3Â on Tuesday. The senior center is also second in rebounds, 9.0Â per game, and first in blocks with 18.
Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie), who was held to six points, snapped his scoring streak but the junior forward still ranks seventh in the conference with an average of 15 points per game. His six points stemmed from a pair of three-pointers, one of which was with 30 seconds left in the first half, as he continues to led the conference with 3.4 threes per game.
Although the team tied with Franklin Pierce in rebounds last game, the Chargers once again outrebounded their opponent, this time 33-30. New Haven also continues to dominate the paint, having not been bested in that category yet, as they outscored the Greyhounds, 40-26 down low.Â
Led by Lane, who finished with two steals, New Haven forced six turnovers, converting them into two points on offense. After tallying a season-high five blocks last game, Majak swatted away another three on Tuesday while Lane also got a hand on one for his second of the year.
Despite yielding their highest field goal percentage to an opponent since their season-opener, the Chargers' defense is still atop of the leaderboard as they've held their opponents on the year to a conference-low in both field goal percentage and three-point percentage. Ranking first in both categories, opposing teams are shooting only 38.3 percent from the floor and 31.4 percent from beyond the arc against the stout New Haven defense. On the other end, the offense averages 72.4 points per game on 50.6 percent shooting, second most in the conference.

Now 5-2 on the season (5-1 in conference play), the University of New Haven men's basketball team make a brief trip on the road while continuing non-conference play as they'll visit the Chestnut Hill Griffins for the final game before the winter break.
