Lead
The University of New Haven men's basketball team defeated the Bloomfield Bears, 74-66, on Thursday night for their fourth straight win on the season. Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton) made eight field goals in the win to help lead the Chargers with a 20-point performance, his third of the season. Four of the senior's made baskets came from beyond the arc as Perry hit a season-high 4-of-7 from deep. The win was the Chargers first outside of NE10 play and marked their fourth straight win over Bloomfield in the all-time series. New Haven will hit the road for one more game before a break in the schedule as they will visit the Chestnut Hill Griffins on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 P.M. at Sorgenti Arena in Philadelphia.
Inside the SeriesÂ
This Sunday marks only the 2nd meeting between these out of conference opponents as the Chargers enter with a 1-0 lead in the all-time series after defeating them last season. The Chargers first clashed with the Griffins on Dec. 19, 2021 when they won the inaugural game in a dominant 88-69 effort. Although Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) was the leading scorer in that game, Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) and Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) both finished the night shooting 6-of-10 while the former edged out his teammate with 15 points.
Scouting the Griffins (4-6, 0-2Â CACC)
Chestnut Hill enters the matchup with a 4-6 record on the season. The Griffins trailed only Jefferson in the CACC Preseason Coaches' Poll as they were ranked second in the South division with 56 points and one first-place vote.Â
The Griffins broke a four game skid with a 66-64 win over Mercy on Dec. 6. Senior guard Trevonn Pitts led the Griffins with an 11 point-10 rebound double-double off the bench. Chestnut Hill followed up the win by defeating Gwynedd Mercy, 67-52, for their second straight win before hosting the Chargers. Noah Charles and Conor Regan both racked up 14 points in the win over the opposing Griffins, including a pair of three-pointers, while the latter also led the team with eight rebounds.
Sophomore guard/forward MJÂ Iraldi has been the team's leading scorer so far this season as he is averaging 17.8 points per game. Iraldi has made 41 of his 76 attempted shots as he is currently shooting 53.9 percent from the field.
Amir Warrick is another scoring threat for this Griffins offense, as he averages 14.7 points per game. Warrick has also been a cornerstone of this defense, entering the matchup with nine steals and six blocks.
Regan and junior guard Nigel Haughton are the only two Griffins to start iand play in all ten games this season The former of the two leads the team from beyond the arc as he's gone 19-52 from deep for a 36.5 three-point percentage.
Through ten games this season, the Griffins are shooting 42.4 percent from the floor, 28.4 percent from three-point range and 65.1 percent from the line. The average 68.5 points per game while allowing 75.6 points per game to their opponents.
Scouting the Chargers (6-2, 5-1Â NE10)
The Chargers enter the matchup on a four-game win streak after defeating the Bloomfield Bears on Thursday night. The win, which was their first in non conference play, marked their fourth win in a row against the Bears. The Chargers currently stand a top of the NE10 with a conference record of 5-1 and an overall record of 6-2.
Leading the Chargers on the night with a 20 points was Perry, who has scored 10+ points in every game to start the season. The senior guard set a season-high by making four of his seven three-point attempts. Perry is currently second among NE1o scorers with an average of 16.9 points.
Lane, who finished with 14 points on Thursday, has also scored ten or more points in every game this year while the guard leads the team with 34 assists. Lane racked up four assists in the win as he is now third in the conference with 4.3 assists per game. Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial High School) follows close behind Lane as he is tied for fourth with 4.0 assists per game. The graduate guard leds the team with 14 steals, including a last second steal on Thursday that led to fastbreak dunk to secure the victory.
Thomas rebounded from a season-low last game with a 12 point performance against Bloomfield. The junior forward made four of his 12 attempts while adding two points at the free throw line. Thomas, who averages a conference high 3.2 threes per game, drained two of his shots from beyond the perimeter.Â
Although his streak of 10+ rebounds came to an end against Assumption, Majak bounced back by racking up a season-high 13 boards to go along with ten points for his third double-double of the season. Majak leads the team with 9.5 rebounds per game while also leading the team and conference in blocks with 20, swatting away another two shots on Thursday night. Majak wasn't the only Charger crashing the boards as Thomas and Kendall McMillan (Columbia, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) pulled in six rebounds each, a career-high for the latter, while the Chargers finished the night with a 39-35 advantage in that column.
New Haven is leading the conference with a 50.2 field goal percentage, tied for best with Bentley. The defense has held opponents to a conference second-lowest 38.8 percent from the floor and 32.7 percent from beyond the arc.
