Winter Storm Bobby had other plans for the New Haven Chargers. The high speed winds and snow accumulations across New England prompted the postponement of the NE10 matchup between the Chargers and Ravens at Franklin Pierce.
On Wednesday, it will be 10 days since the Blue and Gold tipped off on the hardwood. Their last contender: a 65-64 nail biter against Assumption that pushed New Haven to 7-5 in the conference.
Inside the Series
New Haven has had 32 meetings with the Pace Setters, 19 of which have resulted in a victory for the program. Since taking over the program in 2010, head coach Ted Hotaling has lead the Chargers to a 14-8 record under his watch - the most wins Hotaling holds against a single team.
This series dates back to the 1963-64 season under the reign of Don Ormrod. When Hotaling started his career as a Charger, he went 1-1. The following season he lost both games in the regular season but breezed past the Setters 51-49 in the first round of the NE10 Conference Championship, which initiated a 7-0 winning streak over Pace concluding in the 2015-16 season.
After an 11-point fall at the start of the 2015-16 season, New Haven poured out another winning streak of five games this time around.
Since 2018, New Haven has won only one of their five meetings with the Setters. Before Thanksgiving, Pace visited Charger Gym with New Haven leaving 24 points unanswered.
Scouting the Setters (12-8, 8-5 NE10)
Leading the Setters to victory on New Haven territory back in November was junior forward Bryan Powell with 22 points off the bench, making nine of his 12 attempted field goals in only 20 minutes of court action. Powell did not appear in both opening weekend games and averaged 15 bench points his first three appearances off the bench. His performance at New Haven allowed him to finagle his way into the starting five the next go-around at Mercy, Powell remained in the starting rotation since.
Monday night the Setters slipped past Le Moyne on their visit up to Syracuse, 68-67. Austin Gilbertson was fouled while attempting a three with only 1.2 seconds left. Gilbertson went 2-for-2 at the line taking the lead back in favor of the Setters. The graduate guard also hit 1,000 career-points during game action, he finished the night with 17 points.
As a team, Pace loves to shoot from downtown. In their 20 games, they have attempted 438 from three-point range - boiling down to 21.9 attempts per game. In actuality they connect on 8.1 buckets per game and are fifth in the conference for their three-point percentage, 36.8. New Haven is right below them on this list.
Scouting the Chargers (11-6, 7-5 NE10)
The Chargers fell down one spot in the Southwest division rankings in the NE10 after Pace's victory Monday. New Haven has had two postponements since their last played game when Assumption came to the Constitutional State back on Jan. 22 leaving them with little opportunity to work their way up the totem pole. With ten days between the last time they played and Wednesday, the Blue and Gold are charged up and ready to play.
Rebounding has never been a strong suit of the Chargers. They average 36.4 rebounds per game, eight in the NE10, with the 7-foot-1 senior leading the team in this category: 126 throughout the season, an average of 7.4 boards per game.
Scoring in Sudan
Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), who has the tallest stature in the conference, has a story that is unique - not like your average ball player. Written by Mike Anthony, CT Insider published an article about Majak's growth as a player and the characteristic that separates him from the handful of players around him.
With a 90-inch wingspan, Majak has aspirations to go pro after his Division II career. His family was a driving factor and motivator for his enrollment in school, he hopes to give back to them by giving them the opportunity to see him on a bigger stage.

When and Where
With New Haven 11-6 and .538 in conference play, the Chargers head to the Goldstein Fitness Center to meet with Pace once again this season. The Blue and Gold are split 4-4 on the road, but hope to improve upon that record on their visit to the Empire State.
Come Feb. 2 the men will tip off after the conclusion of the women's Pace-New Haven match up, approximately at 7:30 p.m. To watch, visit the NE10 Now Network or follow along online with live play-by-play stats on NewHavenChargers.com.
