SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
The Chargers enter this weekend matchup against Adelphi looking for revenge for an earlier season game in which Adelphi beat the Chargers 58-59 on a last second jumper.
The win sends the Chargers to 9-14 on the year as their conference record rises to 4-13. In a game that had no shortage of action, New Haven worked their way up to a ten point lead in the first quarter after allowing a three-pointer to start the contest.
Leading the Chargers on offense was
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community), who finished with 18 points after shooting 6-13 from the field, while reaching double-digit scoring in 18 of the 23 games this season. The senior guard also tallied six rebounds and four assists in addition to three steals in the win, extending her streak to 17 games while only being held to zero points once this season.
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) dominated the paint, racking up a 17 point-10 double-double in which she shot 8-12. The junior forward has grabbed ten or more rebounds in 14 of the 22 games she's played in as she averages a double-double on the season with 11.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) put up 11 shots, making six of them, to end with 16 points while draining three three-pointers.
Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) enjoyed an 11 point-six rebound performance which included some timely shots including a three-pointer off an assist from DeBose with less than three minutes left to give the Chargers a six point lead.
Coming one point short of being the fifth Charger with double-digits was
Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy), who, while only nine points, did a little bit of everything by racking up eight assists and five rebounds. King's eight assists is a new career-high for the junior guard, breaking her previous record of seven on Feb. 8 against Saint Rose.
The Chargers turned those turnovers into 15 points on the other end while Southern Connecticut scored 20 points off of turnovers. The Chargers outrebounded the Owls, 38- 34 while dominating the paint, 36-12. SCSU scored nine points on second chance opportunities while New Haven scored seven.
The Chargers now rank sixth as a team in total rebounds (37.9) while ranking fourth in offensive boards (12.5) and 11th in defensive rebounds (25.4). New Haven ranks 11th in the conference with 58.3 points per game but they are also sixth in the NE10 with 62.2 points allowed per game. The Chargers shoot 37.8 percent on the year while allowing opponents to shoot 38.1 percent.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
The Panthers enter the matchup 11-11 on the season and 9-8 during conference play, as they are on a one-game win streak after picking up a 62-56 win over Saint Rose on Saturday. The win broke a three game skid for the Panther.
On offense, Adelpi is led by graduate guard Emily Miccile, who averages 14.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Miccele is also 102- 273 from the field, this season on 37.4 percent shooting. Miccile is tenth in the NE10 in points per game and 10th in rebounds, as well.
In the Panther's last game, Miccele racked up a 30 point-14 rebound double-double while dominating on defense with three blocks and three steals.
The only other player with double-digit points was Ty'zhea Hawkins who finished the game with 11 points on 5-13 shooting. Hawkins was also the one to hit the game-winning shot over the Chargers on Jan. 17. Hawkins averages 11.2 points per game.
Kaitlyn O'Connell has been the Panthers leading threat from beyond the arc, shooting 23-80 (28.8%) on the season. Rebecca Lee and Emma Cuccurullo average 7.4 and 6.9 points as well as 6.3 and 5.9 rebounds, respectively.
The Panthers have seen 11 players start at least one game this season with the most recent lineup being Miccile, Hawkins, Lee, Cuccurullo and Sydney Rosenoff.
On defense, Adelphi averages 8.3 steals and 4.7 blocks per game. The Panthers have seven players with 10+ steals on the year, with Miccile leading the team with 49 with Cuccurullo in second with 43. Miccile is also the Panther's lead shot blocker, with 40 as she leads the NE10.
Adelphi ranks tenth in the conference with an average of 60.1 points per game, while shooting a second worst 36.1 percent from the field. The Panthers allow an average of 61.6 points per game to their opponent on 38.1 percent shooting. As a whole, they rank 12th in the conference, averaging 36.8 rebounds for a -3.6 margin.
Adelphi boasts a diverse roster comprised of 11 guards, five forwards, and one center. The class makeup is divided into six freshmen, two sophomores, no juniors, three seniors and six graduate students.
The Panthers are led by head coach Sade Jackson, who returned to her alma mater as the 12th head coach in the program's history after being named coach on May 17, 2021. She appeared in 110 games as a Panther from 2010-14 and is one of only 22 players in the program's history to reach 1,000 career points. Jackson posted lifetime averages of 10.8 points, 6.1 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game, to go along with 20 career double-doubles and three triple-doubles. Her 6.1 assist-per-game average is tied for 24th all-time in Division II history and her career assist record stands at 673, which is second-most all-time in the NE10.
