OPENING TIP
The University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped their 12th game of the season, a 53-69 loss to the Le Moyne Dolphins on Saturday. The Chargers will continue to play in West Haven as they face the Saint Rose Golden Knights for the second time this season.
INSIDE THE SERIES
History has favored the Chargers in this newly established rivalry. New Haven holds a 13-9 record over the Golden Knights despite dropping their last meeting, 54-58 in Albany on Dec. 4, 2021. The first time these two programs met was on Jan. 6, 2009 and it was a victorious 65-63 effort for the Chargers.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
The Chargers enter this weekday matchup against Saint Rose looking to get back in the win column after dropping a 53-69 loss to the Le Moyne Dolphins on Saturday.
While Saturday's game ended with a loss, it marked a celebration to the graduating class who represented the Blue and Gold during their careers.
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) led the night with 11 points, four rebounds and an assist while going 3-8 from deep. She ranks tenth of all NE10 scorers with an average of 14.6Â points per game.
DeBose continues her dominate defensive campaign, tallying a block and another two steals. She leads the team with 44 steals and 9 blocks. DeBose is also first in the conference with 2.4 steals per game.
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden)Â was held to two points and five rebounds, but still ranks third in the conference with 10.2 rebounds per game while placing first with a 51.3 field goal percentage. The junior forward has reached 11+ rebounds in 11 of the 17 games she's played in.
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) made her return to the court, scoring five points stemming from a 3-5 performance from the line, while the graduate guard also tallied three assists. Pergola ranks seventh in the NE10, averaging 3.2 assists per game.
Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) finished the game with eight points after a perfect 5-5 from the line while recording four rebounds and a steal in the effort, as well.
Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) and
Gabrielle Stickle (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) each tallied six points while hitting a pair of three-pointers each. Both of Stickle's shots came in the first half while Ocasio drained both of hers in the second half.
Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) went 2-3 from the field to finish with five points while sinking a three-pointer herself. The junior guard also recorded a rebound and two assists in 16 minutes of action.
Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) also saw plenty of minutes, going 2-5 to end the game with four points while grabbing a rebound and assisting on two baskets.
Freshman forward
Bianca Pendleton (Accokeek, Md./New Hope Academy) put up four points while pulling down a rebound while
Alyssa Stevenson (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson Central) was held to one basket but grabbed four boards.
On the boards, the Chargers were outrebounded, 27-39, as they rebounded from a season-low two offensive rebounds last week to grab ten last game. New Haven ranks ninth as a team in total rebounds (37.8) while ranking fourth in offensive boards (12.8) and 11th in defensive rebounds (25.0).
New Haven ranks 12th in the conference with 57.5 points per game but they are also sixth in the NE10 with 62.6 points allowed per game. The Chargers shoot 36.7 percent on the year while allowing opponents to shoot 37.9 percent.Â
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
The Saint Rose Golden Knights enter the matchup 3-13 on the season and 2-10 during conference play. Saint Rose is currently on a seven-game losing streak after falling 62-70 to #RV Pace on Saturday. Despite the skid, Saint Rose is only a game ahead of New Haven in the standings.
On offense, the Golden Knights are led by Nina Fedullo who averages 10.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Fedullo is coming off a 19 point-nine rebound effort against the Setters in which she shot 8-12 from the floor. The fifth-year forward also racked up a block and two steals in the loss as she adds to her team leading 23 blocks.
Junior guard Becca Townes has been the team's primary threat from the perimeter, shooting 19-63 (30.2%) from deep while averaging 9.7 points on the year for the Knights. Townes also leads the team with 44 total assists while ranking t-11th in the NE10 with 2.8 per game.
Shamim Wambere is averaging 9.6 in the black and gold after dropping 15 points off the bench in the team's last game while grabbing six rebounds, as well.
The Golden Knights have seen ten players start at least one game this season with the most recent lineup being Fedullo, Jenissa Encarnacion, Kaileigh Hunt, Ryley Blasetti and Isabel Sanchez.
On defense, Saint Rose averages 9.1 steals and 2.9 blocks per game while Fedullo leads te team in blocks (23) and Townes leads in steals (35). Six players on the Knights have tallied 10+ steals on the year while only Fedullo has racked up 10+ blocks.
Saint Rose ranks 14th in the NE10 with n average of 56.2 points per game, while shooting a 14th best 36.4 percent from the field. The Golden Knights allow a NE10 fifth most 64.6 points per game to their opponents on 40.6 percent shooting, 13th in conference. As a whole, they rank 13th in the NE10, averaging 35.0 rebounds for a -4.8 margin.
Saint Rose boasts a young roster comprised of 10 guards, four forwards and two guard/forwards. The class makeup is divided into eight freshmen, four sophomores, three juniors, and one fifth year.
Whitney Edwards was named the head women's basketball coach at The College of Saint Rose on June 1, 2020. An NCAA Division I standout player, she has coached at all three NCAA levels throughout the past 14 years. She is also a former assistant coach at fellow Northeast-10 Conference member Stonehill College and has successfully recruited the Northeast Region corridor from Ontario to Maryland.
