Come Thursday the Penmen and the Chargers will compete on the same court, their first time since Jan. 28, 2020. This game is a makeup from the postponement back on Jan. 25.
Inside the Series
New Haven and Southern New Hampshire have a history that dates all the way back to 1968. Overall the Chargers have fallen to the Penmen on 50 occasions of their total 76 meetings, their most recent being the last time the two schools met in the 2019-20 season. Over the span of 12 consecutive seasons from 1990 through 2002, New Haven went on a 23-game closing streak. Their last victory over the Penmen was in the 2018-19 season, in a 76-62 contest.
Scouting the Penmen (12-7, 8-6 NE10)
From mid-January, cascading into this month, Southern New Hampshire went on a five-game hot streak. However, that ended when the Penmen traveled to Assumption where they fell 73-64 on the road. SNHU will come to New Haven coming off a win to Saint Anselm.
Matt Becht, sophomore guard, will be the Chargers biggest threat in terms of shooting. Right now, he leads the team in points, made three-pointers, and free throws. Becht is 57-of-63 from the stripe this season, a stellar 90.5 percent.
As a team, SNHU is second in the conference when it comes to three-point shooting averaging 37.2 percent over the season.
Scouting the Chargers (13-7, 9-6 NE10)
The Chargers are finding a rhythm. On Tuesday night, the executed a 34-point victory over Saint Rose; a game with 26 assists for New Haven. The team has never seen that many assists in a single game since joining the Northeast-10 conference in 2008. Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) set a career-high of nine assists. He also had eight steals and eight points on Tuesday.
Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y. /Elmont Memorial High School ) shot a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range, collecting half of New Haven's three-pointers last game. Olawoye was one of five who picked up double-digit numbers against Saint Rose on Tuesday, alongside him were Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie), Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), Tavin Pierre Philippe (Brooklyn, N.Y./Baldwin High School), and Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech).
New Haven has won their past two contests, both at home, and are finishing their three-game stretch in Charger Gymnasium with the Penmen. The Blue and Gold remain third in the Northeast-10.
When and Where
For the third game straight, New Haven will tipoff in Charger Gymnasium Thursday evening. SNHU will visit West Haven with game time scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 9. Live game coverage will be available on the Charger Sports Network, as well as play-by-play stats on NewHavenChargers.com.
