OPENING TIP
The University of New Haven women's basketball team picked up their seventh win of the season, and second NE10 victory, in a 74-62 thriller over the Saint Rose Golden Knights on Tuesday hight. The Chargers will continue to play in West Haven as the face the Southern New Hampshire Penmen for the first time since Jan. 28, 2020.
INSIDE THE SERIES
This matchup iss nothing new as this rivalry dates back to when SHNU was formerly New Hampshire College. New Haven holds a 38-21 record over the Penman with a victory in their most recent meeting, 60-49 on the road on Jan. 28, 2020.The first time these two programs met was on Feb. 9, 1981 and it was a victorious 82-58 effort for the Chargers.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
The Chargers enter this weekday matchup against SHNUÂ looking to extend their winning streak after picking up a 74-62 win over Saint Rose on Tuesday Night.
Tuesday's win featured no shortage of action as four Chargers reached double digit points while two tallied double-digit rebounds.
Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) led the team with a breakout performance, racking up 25 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while shooting 8-13 from the field. The junior guard also recorded three steals in the winning effort.
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) came through in the clutch for the Chargers, scoring 14 of her 18 points in the second half. Pergola ranks 26th in the NE10 with 11.2 points per game while placing seventh with 3.2 assists, having four on Tuesday.
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) dominated the paint, racking up a 12 point-12 rebound performance on 6-11 shooting. Deshaies is currently third in the conference with 10.3 rebounds per game while shooting a second-best 51.5% from the field. The junior forward has also reached 11+ rebounds in 11 of the 17 games she's played in.
Rounding out the double-digit scorers is none other than
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community), who put up 15 in the win. DeBose has scored double-digit points in 16 of 19 games on the season as she averages 14.6 points per game, 10th in the NE10.
Even though she was held to a quiet night on the scoreboard,
Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) made some noise on the glass, pulling in 11 rebounds including two on offense. Her 11 rebounds ties a career-high for her, having last done it on Nov. 28 against Saint Thomas Aquinas
On the boards, the Chargers were outrebounded, 41-34, as the team now ranks ninth as a team in total rebounds (37.9) while ranking fourth in offensive boards (12.7) and 11th in defensive rebounds (25.2).
New Haven ranks 12th in the conference with 58.5 points per game but they are also sixth in the NE10 with 62.6 points allowed per game. The Chargers shoot 37.4 percent on the year while allowing opponents to shoot 37.9 percent.Â
SCOUTING THE PENMEN
The Southern New Hampshire Penmen enter the matchup 15-5 and 94 during conference play. SHNU is currently on a one-game losing streak after falling 76-79 to Saint Anselm in overtime on Tuesday.Â
On offense, the Penmen are led by Gyanna Russell, who averages 14.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Russell is coming off a 12 point and five assist effort in which she shot 5-9.
Leading the Penmen in the loss was Karlee Ziliak who racked up 31 points, six rebounds, two assists and four steals while shooting 11-20, including 4-7 from three. Ziliak averages 11.7 points per game on the season.
The Penmen's most dominant threat is Meg Knollmeyer who averages 13.6 points and 13.0 rebounds per game while shooting an even 50 percent from the floor. Knollmeyer was named NE10 Player of the Week twice this season, week 6 and week 10. In her last game, Knollmeyer put up a 17 point-15 rebound performance while tallying four steals and a block.
SHNU's main threat from beyond the arc has been Adriana Timberlake, who is 45-117 (38.5%) from deep to average 13.0 points per game. Timberlake is also tied with Jenna Roche for a team leading 58 assists this season.
The Penmen have only seen seven players start at least one game this season with the most recent lineup being Knollmeyer, Ziliak, Timberlake, Roche, and Russell
On defense, Southern New Hampshire averages 7.2 steals and 4.0 blocks per game while Knollmeyer leads the team in blocks (36) and steals (43). Five players on the Penmen have tallied 10+ steals on the year while Knollmeyer and Ariana Koivisto are the only two with 10+ blocks.
SHNU ranks first in the NE10 with an average of 73.0 points per game, while shooting a second best 41.8 percent from the field. The Penmen allow a NE10 seventh most 63.0 points per game to their opponents on 36.8 percent shooting, third in conference. As a whole, they rank seond in the NE10, averaging 42.5 rebounds for a +6.5 margin.
Southern New Hampshire boasts a diverse roster comprised of six guards and eight forwards. The class makeup is divided into two freshmen, three sophomores, three juniors, three seniors and three graduate students.
Karen Pinkos was named the eighth head coach in the history of Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball on May 5, 2005. A 1988 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Pinkos spent nine years as an assistant at Northeastern University prior to accepting the position at SNHU and owns over 16 years of Division I coaching experience.
