Final Preparations set ahead of Conference Championships

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – For their final meet ahead of the Conference Championships, the New Haven Women's Track and Field team stayed close to home traveling to Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday to compete in the Jim Barber, Jack Maloney Tri-Meet.

 

Daphna Gerber (/Glenbrook South High School) opened up the meet for the blue and gold competing in the 400 meter dash. Gerber, competing in the first of two sections, set the bar high running a (1:05.58) in the heat.  Her time placed him second overall in the event for the Chargers.

 

Isabelle Bostic took home two second place finishes on the day, first in the 1500 meter and then in the high jump. In the 1500, Bostic ran a (5:09.00) finishing in second place and just beating out teammate Elizabeth O'Donnell (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) who crossed in the event in (5:20.72) to take third. In the high jump, Bostic flew high in the high jump. Bostic set the height and opened up at 1.45 meters, clearing that on her first try. She would move up to 1.50 meters and would narrowly miss finishing with a height of 1.45 meters to finish in second place.

 

In the field, Neva Bostic (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) continued her domination throwing the Javelin winning yet another meet for the blue and gold. Ranked second in the region, Bostic had her best mark on her opening throw. Bostic opened up with a throw of 37.70 meters, she set the bar that would go untouched. Bostic would get close but that throw would remain her best winning the event for the Chargers.

 

Hope Cuomo (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) picked up a pair of third place finishes in Jav and the 400 meter hurdles. Cuomo began the meet throwing and progressed, throwing her best mark on her third throw. After opening up with a mark of 23.82 meters she went on to throw 24.71 meters before her best throw. On her third throw Cuomo found the release and threw 27.25 meters moving into third place and would finish there in her first event. She would compete again in the 400 meter hurdles for the first time finishing in third place. In the event, Cuomo ran a time of (1:20.27) finishing in third place for the blue and gold.

 

Mikayla Yatsko (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) hurdled her way to second place in the 400 meter hurdles and finished fifth in the Javelin. In the first event of the day, Yatsko threw 26.37 meters to take fifth place in the meet but her best was still to come. In the 400 meter hurdles, Yatsko competed for the first time and ran (1:15.81) to take home second place for the blue and gold and set a mark for herself in the event going forward.


With the regular season complete the attention now turns to the postseason and the Conference Championships next week. During indoor the field events were strong and the team looks to build upon that along with on the track to build upon their third place finish in indoor. The Conference Championships begins on Friday and will conclude on Saturday with the blue and gold looking to be atop the conference.
