FULL CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT RELEASE
WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior thrower Neva Bostic (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) and senior jumper Kristen Washington (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) proved they have the full package for the New Haven women's track & field team, both combining success in their field events with success in the classroom to earn College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team honors as announced by the organization on Thursday.
Combined, the pair are part of 11 student-athletes named to the District I First Team and both are now eligible for CoSIDA's Academic All-America program which all combined honors more than 1,500 student-athletes across all NCAA sponsored sports at Division I, II, III, NAIA, two-year colleges and Canadian institutions.
To be nominated, student-athletes must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 or above and be a starter or key reserve on their team. Student-athletes are nominated by CoSIDA members at each institution. Among the prestigious past honorees is former MLB player and current manager Joe Girardi.
Washington led the Chargers jumpers all season long and will compete in the NCAA Division II Nationals this weekend after qualifying in the triple jump, one of 24 athletes to earn the honor. The New Haven, Conn. native hit a mark of 12.40 meters early in the spring season at the Alan and Connie Shamrock Invitational, with that mark holding as the one of the top-two in the region throughout the spring season.
Overall, Washington never finished outside of the top-three in both of her spring events – triple and long jump – in four different meets, including taking home first place honors four times, twice in each event.
Bostic has consistently improved her career-best tosses all season long in the javelin throw, taking home first place honors in the event six times during the spring season, including taking title honors at the Northeast-10 Championship, her first conference title as a Charger.
The junior from Saint Johnsbury, Vt. saw her best throw come at the Wilton Wright Invitational where she tossed a distance of 39.51 meters to take home medal honors, with that mark holding as a top-three mark in the region throughout the outdoor season.
