THE LEAD
The New Haven women's soccer team will commence its 29th season in program history, and its 12th under the tutelage of head coach Laura Duncan on Thursday evening with the first of two neutral site games, first up facing the Post Eagles with kickoff slated for 5:00 p.m.
SERIES HISTORY VS POST
In a series that dates back to the 1995 season, just the third year the program existed, the Chargers hold a commanding 14-0-2 overall record against the in-state rival Eagles. The series began under Post's previous designation of Teikyo Post, with New Haven winning the first six games by a combined 33-1 score with the lone goal for the Eagles in the very first meeting. The first of the stalemates came in 2002 with a 2-2 draw. Following that, the Chargers rattled off seven straight wins before a 1-1 draw in 2019. The two teams also took to a second overtime before New Haven scored the golden goal in a 3-2 victory in the return from the CoVID-19 pandemic shutdown.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (0-0, 0-0 NE10)
The Chargers will look to a handful of transfers to help lead the way in 2022 with a trio of those newcomers making the transition for graduate schools from Division I schools. Among the highlights in that group is goalkeeper Amanda McQuillan (Meath, Ireland/) who played three years at Central Connecticut State University which included wrapping up her time in New Britain with a 1.09 goals-against-average, eight shutouts and 64 saves in 2021. Joining her in the back row will be UConn transfer Halle Palmedo (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) who played in 16 games last year for the Huskies. Rounding out the Division-I transfers will is a transplant from Youngstown State, Angelina Schilling (Sewell, N.J./Deptford Township), a midfielder who finished 14 games played with one assist last season. Among the leading returners for the Chargers is graduate midfielder Mackenzie Myers (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) as well as the top two leading scorers from last season, both rising sophomores, Meghan Dellea (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) and Vickie Fleming (Burlington, Conn./Lewis Mills). Combined, Dellea and Fleming net five goals and four assists. Myers finished her senior campaign last year with a goal and two assists.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES (0-0, 0-0 CACC)
Coming off of a 6-9-1 season that concluded in heartbreaking fashion in the CACC quarterfinals, Post was picked to finish ninth overall in a poll of the league's head coaches. Post will look to rely on returning strength of returning forward/center-midfielder Lydia Asamoah who was the only Eagle to earn postseason accolades following the 2021 campaign when she earned a spot on the All-CACC Second Team. Last season, Asamoah finished second on the team with four goals. Also among the leading returns is junior forward Hailey McGee who finished last season as the Eagles leading scorer with three goals and four assists with 10 points. The Eagles also return one of their two starting goalkeepers from last season, sophomore Claire Said who finished 553 minutes of action with a 1.14 goals-against-average and 23 saves.
THE SCHEDULE
The New Haven women's soccer team will play an 18-game schedule in 2022 with half of those games to take place at the friendly confines of Kathy Zolad Stadium. In addition to the two opening neutral site games at Pace, the Charges will play three more non-conference games before opening league play against American International on Saturday, September 10. The three non-conference tests before league action includes a trip to Holy Family and home games against STAC and Bloomfield. The 2022 NE10 schedule will consist of 12 games, with the top eight teams among the 13 league squads, advancing to the NE10 Championship which is scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 30.
UP NEXT
The Chargers will play a second-straight neutral site game when they return to the campus of Pace University to take on the Georgian Court Lions on Saturday with opening kickoff scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
