WHAT'S ON TAP
Returning home with no plans of leaving anytime soon, the New Haven women's basketball team will begin a stretch of four-straight home games that will encompass the entire month of December, with the next game away from Charger Gym not coming until the New Year. Starting that home series will be a visit from NE10 foe Southern New Hampshire as the Chargers look to secure their first win in conference play and hand the Penmen their first loss in conference play.
SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
Sophomore Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) has filled the void left by the loss of two of the top three scorers from a year ago as she is averaging 16.2 points across the first five games of the year, including a career-high 30 points in the season opener against Wilmington. Graduate student Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) has also picked up where she left off last season, averaging a double double through the first four games, the only player in the NE10 to average a double double with 11.6 points and 10.4 rebounds to her credit. The addition of transfers Makaela Johnson (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) (Saint Rose) and Nayeli Dowding (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) (Hartford) has also paid off for the Chargers with Johnson averaging 7.0 points and 5.4 rebounds, while Dowding is adding 7.4 points per game. In the backcourt, fifth-year head coach Debbie Buff turned to the experience of senior Gabrielle Stickle (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) to run the offense and she hasn't disappointed as she has dished out 18 assists, ninth most in the NE10, including a career-high eight in the win over Goldey-Beacom, while scoring a season-high 11 last time out against Pace. Despite losses in its last three games, New Haven is outscoring opponents by an average of 9.0 points per game, scoring 80+ in the first two games of the season, after hitting that scoring mark just once all of last season. All combined, the Chargers are shooting 41.5 percent (119-287) as a team, led by Hogan who is shooting 52 percent from the field (31-60).
SCOUTING SNHU
One of two teams that remains undefeated in Northeast-10 Conference play, the Penmen look to maintain that unblemished record using the success that has them outscoring their opponents by 11.5 points per game. Leading the way is a trio of players in double figures with senior forward leading the trio averaging 17.8 points per game. She also leads in the rebounding column where she adds a 9.0 per game average while also blocking 15 shots, second most in the NE10. Following Knight in the scoring column is graduate guard Adriana Timberlake and sophomore forward Meghan Gordon who are averaging 16.8 and 12.8 ppg, respectively. Both are also averaging over five rebounds per game, while Timberlake leads the team with 20 assists and 12 steals.
