WHAT'S ON TAP
As it takes a break from Northeast-10 Conference play, the New Haven women's basketball team looks to snap a five game skid and pick up its third win of the season on Sunday with a matinee featuring the visiting Georgian Court Lions.
SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
Sophomore Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) has filled the void left by the loss of two of the top three scorers from a year ago as she is averaging 15.3 points across the first six games of the year, including a career-high 30 points in the season opener against Wilmington. Graduate student Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) has also picked up where she left off last season, averaging 11.4 points per game and 10.0 rebounds per game to complete a double double, the only player in the NE10 to average double figures in both scoring and rebounding. The addition of transfers Makaela Johnson (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) (Saint Rose) and Nayeli Dowding (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) (Hartford) has also paid off for the Chargers with Johnson averaging 6.0 points and 4.7 rebounds, while Dowding is adding 6.9 points per game. In the backcourt, fifth-year head coach Debbie Buff turned to the experience of senior Gabrielle Stickle (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) to run the offense and she hasn't disappointed as she has dished out 25 assists, 10th most in the NE10, including a career-high eight in the win over Goldey-Beacom, while scoring a season-high 11 against Pace. Despite losses in its last five games, New Haven is outscoring opponents by an average of 4.7 points per game, scoring 80+ in the first two games of the season, after hitting that scoring mark just once all of last season. All combined, the Chargers are shooting 39.6 percent (156-394) as a team, led by Hogan who is shooting 50 percent from the field (39-78).
SCOUTING GEORGIAN COURT
Looking for their first win of the 2023-24 season, Georgian Court returns to action after a hiatus that included the postponement of its last two games due to injuries and sickness. For the season, the Lions are being outscored by 22.6 points per game, mustering an average of just 54.0 ppg, while shooting 34.9 percent overall. Leading the team is a pair of players who average double figures with Safiatu Kolliegbo tops on the team at 15.0 ppg. She is the only player to start all seven games and is playing a team-high 35.6 minutes per game. Nearly half of her 35 total field goals (13) have come from outside the arc as she has eight more long range buckets than any other player on the team. Additionally, she is among the leading rebounders with an average of 5.9 per game and leads the team with 15 assists and nine steals. Following her in the scoring column is Erika Aspajo who is averaging 11.0 ppg, but has only player in three of the team's seven games.
