Clark Vaults to Silver Medal and leads Chargers at NE10 Conference Championships

BOSTON, Mass. – After a season of preparation it finally came time for the University of New Haven Women's Track and Field team to take the track and compete against the best of the best in the conference for the Northeast 10 Conference Championships at the Track at New Balance. Ahead of the meet, Kristen Washington (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) was named an athlete to watch at the meet competing in both the triple and long jump.

Molly Clark (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) competing at her first ever NE10 Championships took home the silver in the pole vault. With her personal best of the season being 2.75 meters, Clark entered the competition clearing 2.43m on her first attempt. Clark then progressed to 2.58m and 2.73m clearing both with ease on her first attempts. She would go on to attempt a new personal best with the bar set at 2.88m and Clark came close narrowly missing clearing. Clark would finish with a final mark of 2.73m just shy of her personal best and that would finish her second overall in the event to take the silver medal for the Chargers and score eight points for the blue and gold.

Kristen Washington (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) took home two bronze medals from the sandpit competing in both the long and triple jump. The sand had been Washington's home and she made the sand at the New Balance Track her home as well. After fouling her first jump and resetting, Washington found her steps and jumped 5.41m on her second jump before responding with a jump of 5.61m. That would then be bested by her third fifth jump of 5.66m followed by her best being saved for last with a final mark of 5.67m on her final jump to slide up and move her onto the podium winning the bronze medal. Washington then added to her medal count with a bronze medal in the triple. Washington opened up the event with a jump of 10.76m moving her quickly into third. Holding at third through three jumps Washington slid to fourth with her competition jumping 11.14 to take the third place spot. Washington however had other thoughts and left it all out on the runway jumping her best mark of the event, 11.67m on her sixth and final jump to reclaim third and take her second medal of the meet.

Isabelle Robinson (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) finished fourth overall in the shot put with a best throw of 11.60m. Robinson, who had to wait for the second heat of the event needed little time to get warmed up throwing an opening mark of 9.70m before coming back and throwing 10.99m on the second. Robinson continued to increase her mark and found her best on the fourth throw landing the mark of 11.60m to take fourth and claim five points for the blue and gold.

The 4x800m relay team composed of Angelina Schilling (Sewell, N.J./Deptford Township), Elsie Kaas (Elverson, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), Da-Xia Colon and Hannah Swain (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) claimed five points with a fourth place finish crossing in 10:11.08.

The distance medley relay team of Isabella Bostic (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy), Kalaya Fitch (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), Angelina Schilling (Sewell, N.J./Deptford Township) and Alexandra Kenealy finished fifth overall with a time of 13:02.33 to take four points.

Emily Mazzucco (East Haven, Conn./East Haven) competed in her first ever pentathlon scoring 2182 points with a first place finish in the long jump where she jumped 5.10m.

Overall the chargers finished with three medals, one silver and two bronze medals and finished sixth overall scoring 54 points in the meet. With the team silver the Chargers turn now return home proud with their accomplishments but hungry for more and hunting for the overall win. The Chargers return to the track for one final regular season meet competing at the Southern Connecticut State Last Chance Meet where the team will look to qualify and move up in ranking for the NCAA Division 2 Championships. The race for the last chance meet begins Saturday February 24 at Southern Conn. State.
