MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Opening up its 2023 schedule, the New Haven men's cross country team posted a second place finish among six teams at the Wesleyan Cardinal Invitational.
Picking up right where he left off last fall, Mohammed Abunar (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) continues to pace the Blue and Gold, finishing fourth overall among a field of 62 runners. The sophomore closed out the 6k course in a time of 19:27.2, shaving 16 seconds off of his time on the same course last season and averaging 5:13 per mile.
Junior William Brown (Middletown, Pa./Middletown Area), who took home title honors last season at this event, followed Abunar into the chute, taking ninth place overall with a time of 19:55.7. Rounding out the top-three for New Haven was junior Chrisopher Bantle who came in 14th overall with his time of 20:37.2 nearly 2:30 faster than last season at the Wesleyan Invitational.
Capping off New Haven's scoring was senior Dathan Chann (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) and junior Daniel Barberio (Levittown,N.Y./Holy Trinity Diocesan) who finished 16th and 19th, respectively. Chann finished the course in a time of 20:54.6, while Barberio posted a time of 21:21.7.
The Chargers will return to action this coming weekend when they travel to North Dartmouth, Mass. to compete in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday, September 16. The event will be held at the Coach Robert Dowd Cross Country Course.
