BLOOMFIELD, Conn. – Competing in its first event of the fall season, the New Haven women's golf team posted a fifth place finish at the Hartford Hawks Invitational hosted at Tumble Brook Country Club.
Overall for the two-day tournament, the Chargers finished with a combined 655, 79 strokes over par on the par 72 course. Leading the way for New Haven was freshman Sofia Cova (Rome, Italy/German School of Rome), who in her collegiate debut finished t-10th overall with a 159, 15 strokes over par. The rookie improved her play from the first round, finishing five strokes better, 77, in round two.
Another rookie, Erin Earl (London, England/Saffron Walden County Day) also improved from her first round score, shaving four strokes off to post an 80 in round two and finish the event tied for 19th with a two-round total of 164. Freshman Wynter Flores (San Antonio, Texas), who led the Chargers in the opening round, finished one stroke behind Earl with a 165, t-21st, to close out the tournament third overall for the Blue and Gold.
Rounding out the top four for New Haven was sophomore Danielle Jastrab (Camino, Calif./Eldorado) who finished tied for 26th overall with a +23, 167. Also making her debut for New Haven was Sophia Silva (San Antonio, Texas/Incarnate Word) who rounded out the Charger five, finishing 34th overall, +32, 176.
The Chargers will return to action next week when they head to Westminster, Mass. for the Franklin Pierce Invitational with the Raven hosting the two-day event at The Woods of Westminster Golf Club. The first round of the event is scheduled for Monday, September 18, with round two set for Tuesday, September 19.
