THE LEAD
After a setback on the road on Saturday, the New Haven men's basketball team is looking forward to returning to its own home court for the first time in the month of February as they welcome the current top team in the Northeast-10 Conference, Saint Michael's, to the Hazell Athletic Center.Â
SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
The Chargers continue to rely on the leadership of Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) who was impressive in the second half against Saint Rose, scoring 22 of his 25 points to lead the Chargers to victory. With that season-high in the scoring column, he now averages 14.7 ppg and is the biggest threat from outside the arc with 48 of his 111 total field goals from long range. Additionally, New Haven will need to rely on its youth which they have for much of the season with two of the top three scorers in their first season of eligibility. Leading that duo is true freshman Jah'Likai King (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) added his second 30+ performance at home against Bentley and now leads the team averaging 16.0 ppg. The rookie guard also leads the team with 63 assists and 31 steals and has scored 20+ eight times this season. The other rookie that has made an impact this season is redshirt sophomore Ethan Simmon (Edison, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen) who is third on the team averaging 10.9 ppg, while he is third overall in rebounding at 3.8 rebounds per game.
SCOUTING SAINT MICHAEL'S
With six games remaining in the regular season, the Purple Knights are looking to lock in the top spot in the NE10 following the regular season and a bye in the opening round of the NE10 Championship at the start of March. Currently, Saint Michael's stands two games in the win column ahead of Adelphi holding down that No. 1 position and are currently receiving votes in both the NABC and D2CSC national polls. For the season, the Purple Knights are averaging 78.3 points per game with an average of 4.0 more than their opponents. The 78.3 ppg average is currently third best in the NE10. Individually, the Purple Knights are led by Romar Reid and Darrell Yepdo who average 16.7 and 16.2 ppg, respectively. The pair also lead the way in assists and steals with Yepdo tops in both categories with 89 an 47 and Reid just behind him with 61 and 31. As a team, the Purple Knights are a major threat from outside the three point arc where they are averaging 10.8 per game and their 238 total three pointers is more than 41% of their total field goals.
SERIES HISTORY vs SAINT MICHAEL'S
·       New Haven and Saint Michael's meet for the 29th time in the history of the two programs.
·       With a loss in the first game this season in Colchester, New Haven now holds a 15-13 lead in the previous 28 meetings.
·       The win in the first game last season snapped a series of four-straight wins for New Haven, who extended beyond that had won nine of the previous 11 heading into the season.
