BLOOMFIELD, Conn. – After a short rest week, the University of New Haven Men's Golf team was back in action, returning to the course, as they stayed in the Nutmeg State and traveled up North to compete at the Hartford Hawks - Gillette Ridge Invitational at Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Gillette Ridge, an Arnold Palmer Signature course posts a difficult round for golfers with 45 bunkers ranging the course, playing Par 72, (36 in, 36 out) with a spread of holes with the bunkers and water hazards coming into play. New Haven was one of ten teams competing at the event and one of two from the Northeast 10.
After bogeys on the third and fourth hole, Hermann Gavilan (Valencia, Spain) bounced back birdieing three straight holes, including the Par three eighth, as he finished E (36) on the front. The back nine, saw Hermann close out strong, eagling the Par 5, 17 to finish the back nine as he did the front, E, (36) and finish the round, E (72). The 17 hole was Hermann's hole as he eagled that hole again in the second round as he would finish the second round +3 (75) finishing tied for second and three shots back of the leader.
Alex Mitrovich finished tied for 17th as he carded an opening round +5 (77) before shooting a second round, +9 (81) for a combined score of +14 (158).
Frank Ferru Jr. finished tied for 20th as he carded an opening round +8 (80) before shooting a second round +8 (80) for a combined score of +16 (160).
Aaron Browning (Waxhaw, N.C./Cuthbertson) finished tied 29th as he carded an opening round +9 (81) before shooting a second round +12 (84) for a combined score of +21 (165).
Jaime Hernandez finished 41 as he carded an opening round +15 (87) before shooting a second round +14 (86) for a combined score of +29 (173)
Overall the Chargers finished fourth overall shooting a combined +54 (630) as they shot +22 in the opening round and then shot +32 in the final round.
The Chargers now will compete for the conference crown as they travel to New Hampshire, to play at Concord Country Club for the Northeast 10 Conference Championships. The Championships begin on Sunday, October 6 with the final round being on Tuesday, October 8. All updates, schedules, and post-round recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
