WEST HAVEN, CT – The University of New Haven Chargers have finished in a three-way tie for first place in the Northeast-10 Conference, making them tri champions with Adelphi University and Pace University.
By way of the tiebreakers, the Chargers will be the third seed in the conference playoffs and host the Greyhounds of Assumption University in the first round. This marks the second consecutive year the Blue and Gold will enter the tournament as the third seed. In last year's conference tournament, the Chargers advanced past the first round after a 10-7 win over St. Anselm before a second-round exit courtesy of Adelphi.
Earlier this season, the Chargers traveled to Worcester, MA and came away with a 17-7 win over the Greyhounds.
Katie Schenk (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) and
Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) each found the back of the net four times while
Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton),
Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial),
Lucy Shafer (Haymarket, Va./Battfield), and
Helena Dunwoody (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) each scored a pair with
Lindsey Belmonte (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) burying the team's other goal.
Caprioli led the team with five points, closely followed by Schenk's four. Maddie Sage, in 45 minutes, stopped seven shots and allowed five goals before giving way to
Caroline D'Angelo (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) for the final 15 minutes. D'Angelo turned away one of three shots faced.
The winner of Saturday's game will face the winner of the game between Adelphi and Southern Connecticut.
