MANSFIELD, MA – The Northeast-10 Conference announced its yearly major award winners on Tuesday morning, with the University of New Haven Chargers being well-represented on the awards list. Grad student Katie Schenk (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) took home Midfielder of the Year and head coach Jen Fallon being named Coach of the Year for the fifth time in her career.
Schenk finished tied for fourth in the conference in goals per game (3.35), seventh in points per game (4.24), second in shots per game (8.18), and in the top 20 in assists per game (0.88). The Southbury, CT product also led the Chargers in goals (57), points (72), shots (139), shots on goal (98), game-winning goals (four), free-position goals (18), and free-position shots (27), was second in assists (15), caused turnovers (17) and draw controls (74), and ranked third in ground balls (24).
Fallon guided the Chargers to a regular season Northeast-10 tri-championship. The 19th year shot caller also can be credited with the development of many players on the All-Conference Teams.
Fallon and the Chargers also saw nine players named to All-Conference teams, including four appearing on the First Team.
Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton), Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt), Karly King (Branford, Conn./Branford), and Schenk all were named to the NE10 First Team following incredible seasons.
Seleny, a junior attacker, set career-highs in the following categories: goals (25), assists (24), points (49), shots (55), shots on goal (38), ground balls (20), and caused turnovers (16). Seleny's 24 assists led the Chargers.
Caprioli, a senior midfielder, set career-highs in goals (45), shooting percentage (.529), shots on goal percentage (.847), and tied career-highs in assists (12) and shots on goal (72). The senior's 42 ground balls led the team.
King, a graduate defender, finished with one goal this season while anchoring the Chargers defensive core. She also caused 20 turnovers and came away with 37 ground balls. King's 20 caused turnovers paced the Chargers.
Justine Doyle (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) and Maddie Sage were both named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference Second Team.
Doyle, a senior defender, finished the season with 10 ground balls, 11 caused turnovers, and a draw control. Her 11 caused turnovers ranked second among the Chargers defenders.
Sage, who played in and started all 17 games, set career-highs in minutes (933:03), saves (124), wins (12), and shots faced (366). She led the Chargers in every major goaltending category.
Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) was named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference Third Team following a year in which the junior midfielder set career-highs in goals (19), shots (55), shots on goal (41), and shots on goal percentage (.745). Caglione's 33 draw controls ranked third on the team.
Helena Dunwoody (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) also was named to the Third Team following a season in which she posted career-high totals in goals (25), assists (eight), points (33), and picked up 108 draw controls to lead the Chargers.
Freshmen Sam Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and Sophia Minnion (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) were each named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team after making significant contributions to New Haven's success in their introduction to college lacrosse.
Maucere played in 16 games, starting 10, and made a big impact offensively on the Chargers back end with four goals and eight assists for 12 points. The West Babylon, NY native collected nine ground balls and caused eight turnovers. Her eight helpers led the Chargers freshmen.
Minnion netted 13 goals in 16 games for the Blue and Gold as an attacker. The Wading River, NY product started in three games for the Chargers and scooped up nine ground balls while causing four turnovers. Minnion's 13 goals paced the newcomers in Blue and Gold.
