New Haven Starts Outdoor Season with a Strong Showing at Wesleyan Invitational

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – New Haven Track & Field opened up its outdoor season on Friday at the Wesleyan Invitational. The Blue & Gold picked up right where they left off after a strong indoor season, its first at the Division I level.

On the women's side, Alicia Brown (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) continued to build on a strong freshman campaign, earning a tie for second in pole vault, with a mark of 3.05m. D'Jior Delisser (/) took home first place in long jump, finishing with a top mark of 5.75m. Gabrielle Teel (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) earned the top spot in triple jump, leaping 11.93m, clearing the field with ease. On the track side, the 4x100m relay, consisting of Delisser, Deja Harris, Lakay-Sha Clarke (/), and Jada Kamtha (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust High School for Girls) finished in first with a time of 48.21s. Kamtha also took home an individual first-place finish in the 100m hurdles, finishing with a time of 14.56s. Riley Davis (Preson, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) took home first place and Rayniah Mercedat (/) finished third in the 400m dash. Madeline Klecha (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) rounded out the top three in the 100m dash for New Haven, with a time of 12.94s. Harris wound up with a second-place finish in the 400m hurdles, by way of a time of 1:08.09s. Kamtha (25.71s) and Clarke (25.96s) took home second and third, respectively, in the 200m dash. Finally, the relay consisting of Davis, Mercedat, Piper Lochanski, and Micaela Owen (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) finished in first place in the 4x400m relay.

On the men's side, Noah Cooper (Hopatchong, N.J./Union Catholic) (6.76m) and Cole Parker (Severn, Md.) (6.68m) finished first and third, respectively, in long jump. The triple jump podium was swept by Chargers, featuring Cooper (first), Matthew Steele (North Kingstown, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) (second), and Luis Calderon (/) (third) all earning top marks. Richard Fortune's (/) second-place finish in shot put was capped off by a 46.51m toss in his third attempt. Amir Phelmetto (/) took home third place in the 110m hurdles, finishing with a time of 15.36s, just .01s behind second place. He also finished second in the 400m hurdles, with a time of 57.01s. Kaidyn Nalley (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) fought hard to earn a third-place finish in the 400m dash. To round out the day, Christopher Gregory (/), Nathaniel Peters, Nathaniel Massingale (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior High School), and Nalley made up the first-place finisher 4x400m relay team.

New Haven continues its outdoor season on Saturday, Mar. 28, in Springfield, Mass. as it takes part in the AIC Season Opener.
