St. Michael's Uses Second Half to Get By UNH Women's Basketball

(01-20-10) COLCHESTER, Vt. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team lost 44-59 Wednesday night at St. Michael's College in Vermont. The Chargers fall to 7-10 overall and 5-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference after their eighth straight loss. The Purple Knights improve to 5-10 overall and 3-9 in the NE-10.

Eight minutes into the first half, New Haven found itself down by six points, 14-8. UNH answered with a 7-0 run to take a one point lead at the nine-minute mark. Two minutes later the Purple Knights held a five-point lead after their own 6-0 run. UNH once again answered with another run, scoring eight of the final 10 points of the first half to hold a 23-22 lead at the break.

St. Michael's scored the first points of the second half and took the lead on the next basketball. The Purple Knights then gradually built on their lead. With 9:24 left in the game, Olivia DeMarco connected from three-point territory to bring the Chargers within three points. The Purple Knights then rallied with a 20-6 run to open a 56-39 lead with 1:38 remaining. During that stretch the Purple Knights went 10-for-10 from the foul line. New Haven cut the lead to 12 in the final minutes, but St. Michael's went on to take the 15-point victory.

UNH had 21-second half fouls, compared to 12 by the Purple Knights. The Chargers also struggled shooting in the second half, connecting on 7-of-41 shots from the floor. New Haven held an edge on the board, however, managing 32 second-half rebounds, including 17 offensive rebounds.

Jill Baranger and Helin Marte led the Chargers with 12 points each. Marte added 10 rebounds and five assists. DeMarco also grabbed 14 rebounds and eight points.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday, January 23 when they host St. Anselm College.
