(01-09-10) LOWELL, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped its fifth straight game Saturday afternoon, 61-74 to the UMass Lowell River Hawks. The Chargers fall to 7-7 overall and 5-4 in the Northeast-10, while the River Hawks improve to 8-5 overall and 4-5 in the NE-10.
After New Haven scored the first two points, the two teams exchanged points for the opening six minutes. Over the next five minutes, the Chargers went on an 11-4 run to take a seen point, 22-15, lead at the 9:29 mark of the first half. The River Hawks answered, evening the score with a free throw prior to halftime.
Halftime adjustments favored the River Hawks, as they went on a 21-2 run to open the first ten minutes of the second half. UMass Lowell held a lead, increasing it to as many as 23 points, 64-41, at the 4:44 mark. The Chargers cut the River Hawks lead to nine points with 42 seconds left, but UMass Lowell hit four free throws in the final minute to seal the 13-point victory.
The River Hawks out-shot the Chargers from the floor, 42.4 percent to 33.8 percent and from the free throw line, 82.4 percent to 71.4 percent. UNH was also out-rebounded 45-40. The River Hawks scored 44 points in the paint, while UNH was held to 22.
Freshman Olivia DeMarco led the Chargers with 15 points. She also grabbed five rebounds. Helin Marte added 13 points, while Nicole Pollard scored 10 points.
