(02-13-10) SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team defeated Le Moyne College 65-57 Saturday afternoon in Syracuse, N.Y. With the win New Haven improves to 12-12 overall and 10-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Dolphins fall to 7-17 overall and 4-15 in the NE-10.
UNH jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, at the 16:03 mark on a jumper from Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty. The Dolphins came back to tie the game, 10-10, at the 13:02 mark. The Chargers continued to attack the Dolphins, however Le Moyne tie the game again, 19-19, after a layup from Brady Wangelin. New Haven then went on an 11-0 run to take a 30-19 lead over the next five minutes. The Chargers pushed their first half lead up to as many as 19, 43-24, on layup by Ithier-Vicenty.
Ithier-Vicenty led the Chargers with 11 first-half points, while Dominique Stellmacher and Helin Marte each tallied eight points. New Haven shot 47.1 percent from the floor and 50 percent from beyond the arc.
Both teams were held scoreless in the opening three minutes of the second half. Le Moyne cut the Chargers' lead to just 12 at the 14:14 mark. However, the Chargers extended their lead to 16 on a layup from Olivia DeMarco. The Dolphins fought their way back, finding themselves within six with seven minutes left in the game. With 3:49 left, the Dolphins scored the traditional three-point play bringing themselves within five. Le Moyne cut the lead to just four with 36 seconds remaining, 58-54. UNH kept its composure, hitting eight free-throws down the stretch, securing its 12th win of the season.
Marte led New Haven with 16 points, five rebounds and nine assists. Ithier-Vicenty recorded 11 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Alysia Saunders and Stellmacher each tallied 10 points.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, February 17 when they host the College of Saint Rose at Charger Gymnasium. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
