WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team was defeated in double overtime by Franklin Pierce on Sunday afternoon at Kayo Field. After 103 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Ravens generated the game's lone goal midway through the second overtime. With the loss, the Chargers dropped to 2-3-1 overall, 2-3 in Northeast-10 Conference competition.
The game took place in the middle of the field for much of the opening 45 minutes. The visiting Ravens controlled a 6-0 advantage in shots and a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks, but could not get through the Chargers’ backline. New Haven and Franklin Pierce went into the locker rooms tied at 0-0 at halftime.
After the intermission, the Chargers’ offense picked up considerably. In the 75th minute of play,
Bjorn Hansson (Landskrona, Sweden/Allvar Gullstrandsgymnasiet) nearly put the home team in front on a Chargers’ corner kick. Andres Nunez sent a whipped in cross from the right side where Hansson headed towards the back post. Unfortunately, a Raven defender positioned on the back post, deflected the shot away from trouble.
The best chance for the Chargers came in the last two minutes of regulation.
Steven Gennuso (Middletown, Conn./Xavier ) nearly beat the Ravens’ goalkeeper to the near post on a cross from the right side of the pitch; but the shot sailed wide. After a much more evenly played second half, the two teams would need overtime to determine a winner.
The first extra time featured one shot from each team, but no major scoring opportunities. However in the next frame, Franklin Pierce finally took advantage on one of its 14 corners, beating
Jonathan Creem (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck ) on a rebound goal. Creem was outstanding in the contest, registering six saves in the losing effort.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, September 22nd when they travel across town to take on Southern Connecticut State University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
