New Haven, Concorida Play to 1-1 Tie in Season Opener

Box Score

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team opened the 2010 season with a 1-1 draw with Concordia College (N.Y.). With the tie, the Chargers open the season with a tie for the eighth time in program history.

The Chargers fell behind after allowing the first goal of the season in the 29th minute. The Clippers lobbed the ball over New Haven goalkeeper Jonathan Creem (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck ) and took a 1-0 advantage. Just over 15 minutes later, freshman Gui Dos Santos (Curitiba, Brazil/Bethel (Conn.)) evened the score a one with a header off a corner kick in the 45th minute. The goal came with just 47 seconds left in the first half and seconds after the Clippers goalkeeper was red carded for tripping on a UNH breakaway. Sophomore forward Joe D'Antonio broke away from the pack and beat the keeper before being tripped prior to getting a shot off. The Chargers' ensuing free kick, from just outside 18-yard box, sailed high.

The remaining 65-minutes were relatively uneventful as both teams managed minimal threats on goal. Each team had scoring opportunities in the second half, including a late rally by the Chargers in the closing minutes. Regulation came to an end with the score knotted at 1-1.

Through both overtime periods the Chargers held a 4-0 advantage in shots, including one shot on goal in the 108th minute. After a UNH corner kick with just under two minutes remaining, neither team pressured the goal, ending the game tied at one.

The Chargers led in all statistical categories, including a 19-8 advantage in shots and a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. D'Antonio led the team with four shots, while four others registered two shots. In goal, Creem stopped four shots.
