Chargers Topped By Saint Anselm, 63-57

BOX SCORE MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped a road contest to Saint Anselm College on Saturday afternoon, as the Hawks handed the Chargers a 63-57 loss in the conference clash. With the result, UNH fell to 2-14 overall on the season and 1-12 in the Northeast-10. After a two-game skid for Saint Anselm, the Hawks have now bounced back with two consecutive wins and improved to 8-9, 5-8 in the league.

Anh-Dao Tran led New Haven with 21 points, 17 of those coming in the second half. Audrey Cunningham also had 15 for the Chargers on 5-for-12 shooting from three-point land. Epiphany Smith and Briana Jones led the way for St. Anselm with 14 points apiece and Kiera Moore added 12 points off the bench.

New Haven had a difficult time getting going in the first half, as the Chargers didn’t record a point until the 14 minute mark. Saint Anselm’s defensive pressure forced several Charger turnovers, leading to key baskets in transition. As the halftime whistle sounded, the Hawks carried an 11 point lead into the locker room, 29-18.
New Haven battled back though in the second half, cutting the Hawk lead to within a basket multiple times. However, Saint Anselm always seemed to have an answer, including a 6-0 run with seven minutes remaining in regulation.

The Chargers wouldn’t go away as they managed to cut their deficit to just one with four minutes left, 56-55, after a pair of free-throws from Tran. Unfortunately, that was the last surge from the Chargers offense, as Saint Anselm pulled ahead after a three-point play from Smith. The Hawks made their free-throws down the stretch to solidify their second consecutive conference win.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, January 25 with a conference showdown against Southern New Hampshire. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
