WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s basketball team was defeated by UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon, dropping a Northeast-10 Conference match-up by the final score of 92-56 at Charger Gymnasium. With the loss, the Chargers fell to 2-11 on the season and 1-8 in league competition. The River Hawks improved to 5-8, 3-5 in the conference.
The River Hawks raced out to a quick lead in this one, grasping a 10-1 lead in the first 90 seconds of play. The Chargers fought vigorously to cut into their deficit, but UMass Lowell always seemed to have an answer. The away team used a 10-0 run around the midway mark to take a 30-9 lead. As the whistle sounded for halftime, the River Hawks took a 55-24 lead into the locker rooms.
Ayana Duncanson, Anh-Dao Tran and Lauren Boivin paced the offense for the Chargers, each tossing in seven points at the break. Sha’Nay Bushner and Bianca Simmons led all scorers with 14 points apiece for the River Hawks. UMass Lowell forced 15 UNH turnovers in the first half en route to 26 points.
After the intermission, the Chargers picked it up on the offensive end but couldn’t overcome their deficit. New Haven also fared well on the defensive end, holding the River Hawks to just 37 percent shooting in the second half.
Boivin finished with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds to lead the way for the Chargers. Audrey Cunningham also chimed in with 13 points, all coming from long distance. Tran collected 11 points and four assists and Duncanson concluded the night with 10.
For the River Hawks, Simmons poured in 24 points, Bushner added 19 and Brianna Wilson finished with 17. UMass Lowell forced 28 turnovers in the game and knocked down 10 from behind the arc.
The Chargers return to the hardwood on Tuesday, January 11 with a Northeast-10 Conference showdown against Franklin Pierce. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Rindge, N.H.
