RINDGE, N.H. - The University of New Haven men's soccer played to a 1-1 double overtime tie Saturday evening to nationally ranked No. 2 Franklin Pierce University. The Chargers move to 1-7-3 overall and 0-6-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Ravens moved to 10-0-1, 6-0-1 in conference play.
In just the second minute, the Ravens scored their only goal of the game. Franklin Pierce took the first shot of the game just under the one and a half minute mark after intercepting a pass on the left side of the defense. The Ravens Diego Tabares then took two touches and scored in the lower left corner on UNH goal keeper J.J. Comeau.
After the opening goal, UNH started to play from behind and had one opportunity in the 15th minute when
Dave Ljungquist (Oxford, Conn./Seymour) found a header which went wide. The Chargers next opportunity came in the 29th minute, when Joseph D'Antonio evened the score at 1-1 after receiving a pass from
Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn./Taft / University of Connecticut) off a free kick.
The remaining 80 minutes of Saturday's game were held scoreless and the teams finished in a 1-1 tie.
New Haven's opportunities came in the 106th minute, but more importantly the Ravens attempted a number of shots which were wide or saved by Comeau. In the 78th minute, Ljungquist had UNH's best chance of the second half. He took possession and shot on goal, but a save kept the score even.
Purcell and Ljungquist led the team wih two shots each. As a team, UNH total just five shots, while the Ravens recorded 17 shots.
New Haven will return to action on Tuesday, October 11 when it hosts the College of Saint Rose at Kayo Field. Game time against the Golden Knights is set for 4 p.m.
