Men's Soccer Suffers 2-1 Loss in NE-10 Opener at Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell 2-1 Tuesday afternoon to Stonehill College in its 2011 Northeast-10 Conference opener. The Chargers fell to 0-2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Northeast-10 with the loss. The Skyhawks improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action.

Just eight-minutes and 18-seconds into the opening half, Stonehill netted its first goal of the match. The goal, which got by #J.J. Comeau#, had two assists and found the top left corner of the net. The Skyhawks added 13 more shots in the first half, including four shots on frame. The Chargers managed just two first half shots and one shot on goal.

The second half opened and the Skyhawks led 1-0. Just under 10 minutes into the second period, Stonehill took a 2-0 lead when Anthony Campagnano kicked a shot into the net when diving to find the end of a crossing pass. The Chargers then took over possession for a majority of the second half. UNH took nine shots in the second half and missed a number of chances. Anastasios Petridis (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon ) put the Chargers on the board in the 81st minute with a free kick which landed in the lower right corner of the Skyhawks' net, bringing UNH within one. In the closing minutes, the Chargers still controlled the ball, but fell shot to capitalize when needed.

New Haven registered 11 total shots, four shots on goal, six corner kicks and eight fouls. Stonehill tallied 19 shots, eight shots on goal, four corner kicks and 15 fouls in the game.

Joseph D'Antonio led the Chargers with six shots, while five others added at least one shot. Comeau made five saves, while the team earned the sixth save.

New Haven will return to action on Saturday, September 17 when they host Merrimack College at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
