BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Unviersity of New Haven women's basketball team suffered a 43-60 loss to Saint Anselm College Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers dropped to 2-16 overall and 2-12 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the loss, while the Hawks improved to 11-9 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
New Haven opened Wednesday's game on fire, draining the game's first 11 points.
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) and
Nikita Reddy (Germantown, Md./Germantown) both connected from three-point territory on the way to the Chargers 11-0 lead just over four minutes into the first half. After the 10:43 mark,
Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) put in a layup to give the Chargers a 12-point, 18-6, lead. Two minutes later,
Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) put in a jumper to give UNH a 20-10 lead. The Hawks then rallied in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Saint Anselm went on an 18-5 run in the final minutes, including a 7-0 run to close the final 3:40. The Hawks gained the lead and led by three at halftime, 28-25.
New Haven would exchange the lead with Saint Anselm in the first five minutes of the second half. LeBlanc and Moore combined for a 6-0 which gave the Chargers a 33-30 lead at the 15:22 mark. The Hawks answered with their own run, but New Haven kept the score within three points after a pair of
Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) free throws at the 9:36 mark. With a 42-39 lead, Saint Anselm then went on an 8-0 run to take a commanding double-digit lead. The Hawks did not take off the pressure as they held on down the stretch with free throws and a 17-poitn victory.
The Chargers turned the ball over 20 times which led to 25 Saint Anselm points. The Chargers held a 35-28 advantage on the boards, but trailed 47-31 percent shooting the ball.
Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) led the Chargers with 12 points and 11 rebounds, including eight offensive boards.
Nikita Reddy (Germantown, Md./Germantown) added nine points, while Ashley LaBlanc scored eight and grabbed four rebounds.
