BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A pair of second-half goals just over seven minutes apart were enough for Northeast-10 foe Franklin Pierce to knock off the University of New Haven, 2-0, on Saturday evening under the lights at Kayo Field.
The Chargers drop to 4-6-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the Northeast-10 with the loss. The Ravens, who won the conference title last season and advanced to the NCAA National Semifinals, improve to 8-2-0 on the season with a 6-1-0 NE-10 tally.
Anastasios Petridis (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon ) made four saves in goal for New Haven, and Firmiano Ribiero made a defensive save on a ball bound for the top right corner late in the first half to preserve a scoreless draw entering the intermission.
The Ravens broke the stalemate in the 63rd minute. Jefferson Rojas worked his way into the box and touched the ball over to Gareth Dudney. Dudney chipped the ball from about eight yards out into the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The advantage grew to 2-0 with a 70th-minute tally by Ryan Ruffing. David Lima did most of the work, weaving through several defenders and crossing to Ruffing, who buried it from point-blank range.
Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn./Taft / University of Connecticut) put three shots on goal for New Haven, including a free kick from 32-yards out that sailed just over the crossbar in the 68th minute. Overall, the Chargers were outshot, 14-10.
Jake Wright made four saves to earn the clean sheet for Franklin Pierce.
The Chargers are back on the road this week for Northeast-10 matches at Saint Rose (Oct. 10) and Saint Michael’s (Oct. 13). Action returns to West Haven on Wednesday, Oct. 17 for a 4 p.m. contest against Assumption
