Chargers Outgunned at American International, 4-1

BOX SCORE SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Three goals in a span of 3:41 in the second half negated a goal by #Joseph D’Antonio# as host American International downed the University of New Haven men’s soccer team on Wednesday evening by a score of 4-1.

With the loss, the Chargers fall to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the Northeast-10. The Yellow Jackets improve to 3-6 on the season with a 3-2 conference mark.

After neither club put a shot on goal in the first half, the second period featured four tallies in a span of just 4:03. The Chargers struck first in the 48th minute. Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn./Taft / University of Connecticut) served a ball long to D’Antonio, who beat AIC keeper Jason Ryan to the ball outside the box and lofted it into the vacant cage to give New Haven a 1-0 lead.

The goal was the team-leading fourth of the season for D’Antonio and the 13th of his four-year career.

The lead held up for just 22 seconds, however, as Ed Sharman netted the equalizer on an assist by Kevin Pereira. The Yellow Jackets would then take the lead on a Miguel Rodriguez-Lapman goal in the 50th minute and extended it on a 52nd-minute penalty kick by Conor Doyle to build a 3-1 advantage.

American International would add an insurance tally off the foot of Kyle Kazukynas to run the score to its eventual final of 4-1.

Anastasios Petridis (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon ) made six saves in goal over the first 72:05 of the contest. James Pyatsky (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) stopped both shots he faced during the final 17:55. Ryan went the distance and made three saves for the Yellow Jackets.

The Chargers’ three-match road swing continues on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Bentley and concludes at Dowling on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Action returns to campus on Saturday, Oct. 6 under the lights with a 7 p.m. outing against Northeast-10 Conference rival Franklin Pierce.
