New Haven Tops Defending ECC Champ NYIT, 2-0

BOX SCORE OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – #Gui Dos Santos scored a goal for the third-straight match and (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford / Manchester Community College)Anastasios Petridis# notched his first career solo shutout to guide the University of New Haven men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory on Tuesday at the New York Institute of Technology – the defending East Coast Conference Champion.

The Chargers have now posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2007 to improve to 2-1-0 on the season. The host Bears, who qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season, open their 2012 campaign at 0-1-0.

Dos Santos improved his team-best point total to seven through three matches, netting the first goal of the contest that stood up as the game-winner. Sophomore Omar Algosaibi (Saudi Arabia/Ajyal Al-Aqsa) assisted on Dos Santos’ tally, and Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn./Taft / University of Connecticut) added an unassisted goal to cap off the 2-0 victory.

Petridis made five saves to record the clean sheet. Petridis was also in goal for the first 84:15 of the Chargers’ shutout win over Holy Family on Sunday. Liam Weddy stopped three shots for NYIT.

After a scoreless opening period, the Chargers’ first goal came in the 50th minute. Algosaibi dribbled his way into the box on the keeper’s left side and crossed the ball to a wide-open Dos Santos. The junior forward redirected the pass into the vacant net to put New Haven on top, 1-0.

Dos Santos has now finished 10 goals in his Charger career. The assist was the first point for newcomer Algosaibi.

New Haven would add an 86th-minute insurance marker to put the contest away. Waddy saved an attempt on net by JP DiTommaso (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) but then turned the ball over to Purcell, who blasted a shot from 10 yards out to record his first career goal and run the score to 2-0 in favor of the Chargers.

The Bears outshot New Haven, 13-10, with each club firing five shots on goal.

The Chargers will have a week off from competition before returning to the pitch at Kayo Field on Tuesday, Sept. 11 for their Northeast-10 Conference opener against Stonehill. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. with all of the action broadcast live in high definition and available on most mobile devices on NewHavenChargers.com.
