The University of New Haven men's soccer team returns to the pitch this Saturday for a visit from Northeast-10 foe Saint Michael's. The Chargers enter the weekend at 1-6-1 overall and 1-3-0 in NE-10 play.
Most recently, New Haven dropped a 3-1 decision to American International this past Wednesday. The Chargers struck first with an Andres Torres (Medellín, Colombia/Norwalk (Conn.) / Adelphi University) goal in the 28th minute, but AIC answered just 27 seconds later to knot the match at 1-1. The Yellow Jackets took the lead on a penalty kick in the 60th minute and, with New Haven upping its offensive pressure in search of the late equalizer, the visitors added an insurance marker in the closing minutes to round the 3-1 final.
Torres' goal was his first of the fall as he became the eighth Charger to find the back of the next this season. Alain Laurent (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) is the only student-athlete with multiple tallies after netting a pair in Saturday's 6-3 win at Saint Anselm. Matt Dillon (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) leads New Haven in total points with five – one goal and a team-leading three assists.
Jason Smith (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) and James Pyatsky (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) have both seen significant time in goal for the Chargers, combining for a 2.55 goals-against average.
The Saint Michael's Purple Knights come to Kayo Field with an even 3-3-0 record this fall. The Purple Knights began the season with a trio of losses but has since rattled three-consecutive victories to post a 3-1-0 Northeast-10 tally. Saint Michael's hosted and defeated Saint Anselm, 2-1, in its most recent contest on an Aaron DaCosta golden goal in the 91st minute. The Purple Knights are playing their first road conference match of the season.
For the season, Anthony Stanley has buried two of the Purple Knights' six goals, with four players each adding one marker. Stanley also owns a team-high three assists to cap his point total at seven. Nicco Roque has appeared in goal for all but 45 minutes of the current campaign. He sports a 1.42 goals-against average with two shutouts – both 1-0 home wins over Merrimack and American International, respectively.
Following Saturday's outing, the Chargers will embark on a three-match road trip at Northeast-10 opponents Le Moyne, Stonehill and Adelphi. The Chargers return to Kayo Field on Saturday, Oct. 19 to host Merrimack under the lights at 7 p.m. as a part of Homecoming Weekend.
