WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Following a nearly week-long layoff, the New Haven men's soccer team will return to action against Post this Tuesday afternoon at Kathy Zolad Stadium.Â
INSIDE THE SERIES
New Haven is 12-3-1 all-time against Post. The Eagles have won the last two matches against the Chargers, however the teams have only played each other twice since 2008. Post claimed last year's meeting by a score of 3-2 in Waterbury.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (3-5-1, 1-4-1 NE10)
New Haven snapped a five-match winless skid in its game last Wednesday with a 2-0 victory over Southern Connecticut, their first win over their crosstown rival since 1984. Following a 2-1 start to the year, the Chargers dropped five in a row, three of which were by one goal, including a 4-3 score at No. 1 Adelphi and a 2-1 overtime defeat at Saint Anselm. The Chargers then played to a 1-1 draw at Stonehill on Oct. 5, where they outshot the Skyhawks 19-12 and allowed just three shots on goal.
Junior transfer
Sean Skeens (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Boys) scored his third goal of the season in the win over SCSU. Freshman
Kledis Capollari (Pogradec, Albania/Guilderland) has scored two goals over the last four matches off the bench. Senior
Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) leads the Chargers with four goals and eight points. Junior
Estanislao Desseno (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College) leads the way with four assists and sophomore
JP Viruet (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) has two goals and two assists to his credit.
As a team, New Haven is scoring 1.78 goals per game this season, while allowing 1.89. New Haven has had a good amount of success off set pieces so far this season, scoring eight goals off corner and free kicks through their first 10 games.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES (6-1-3, 4-0-2 CACC)
Post continues to stay hot through the midway portion of the season, not having lost since opening day against current No. 1 Adelphi, 2-1. Unbeaten in their nine matches since, the Eagles are scoring 2.10 goals per game and are allowing fewer than one goal per match at 0.90.
Coming off a scoreless draw against Chestnut Hill on Saturday, Post is 2-1-1 against the Northeast-10 this season, having beaten Le Moyne and Bentley, in addition to a 2-2 draw with then-No. 8 SNHU and their one goal loss to Adelphi.
Junior Sergio Diaz leads the team with eight goals and a conference-leading nine assists for an impressive 25 points through 10 games. Fellow junior Alvaro Sanchez follows with seven goals and 14 points. Sophomores Franceco Perinelli and Sergio Sanchez add two goals apiece.
Goalkeeper David Mollenthiel boasts an .826 save percentage, good for second in the CACC, and is third in the conference with a 0.77 save percentage.
