WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven men's soccer team will hit the road in search of their first conference win with a matchup at Stonehill on Saturday morning.
INSIDE THE SERIES
New Haven is 16-14-1 all-time against the Skyhawks. New Haven won last year's matchup 2-0 at home, but is 3-7 over their last 10 meetings with Stonehill.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (2-5-0, 0-4-0 NE10)
New Haven hits the road for just the third time this season, and looks to snap a four-game losing skid, the last three of which have all come by one goal. Last Wednesday at No. 1 Adelphi, the Chargers used a late rally to pull within one goal in the final minute before ultimately falling 4-3. Junior
Sean Skeens (Auckland, New Zealand) scored a pair of second half goals off headers to get the team within one.
On Saturday, New Haven outshot Saint Anselm, but suffered a tough 3-2 overtime defeat. In their most recent game on Tuesday, the Chargers scored a late goal from
Kledis Capollari (Pogradec, Albania/Guilderland) following a free kick, but it was not enough as they fell 2-1 to Saint Rose.
Estanislao Desseno (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College) tallied two of his team-leading four assists last week at Adelphi. Desseno's four assists also put him in a five-way tie for the conference lead.
Francisco Guedes (Lisbon, Portugal/Maristas de Carcavelos) tallied his first points of the season with a goal and an assist at Saint Anselm. Senior Nate Puduzzi leads the team with four goal and eight points, including a two-goal effort in a 3-0 win over Nyack on Sept. 17.
New Haven has had a good amount of success off set pieces so far this season, scoring seven goals in their seven games off corner and free kicks.
SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS (3-5-0, 1-2-0 NE10)
Stonehill has dropped two matches in a row entering this weekend's contest, including a 2-0 road loss at Southern Connecticut and a 4-3 non-conference final against Roberts Wesleyan.
The only common opponent thus far in 2019 between the two schools has been Saint Anselm, who Stonehill defeated 2-1, while New Haven fell 3-2 in overtime.
Senior Keegan Nutt leads the team with three goals this season. Mackenzie Hoglund and Ian Pereira have two goals each while five different Skyhawks have one assist apiece. In goal, Andrew Hammersley has appeared in seven games, holding an .806 save percentage and a 1.71 goals-against average.
As a team, Stonehill's 1.5 goals per game ranks last in the NE10, while their 2.00 goals-against is 12th in the conference, one spot ahead of New Haven (2.26).
ON DECK
Next up, the Chargers will return home Wednesday afternoon for a showdown with Southern Connecticut State at 4 p.m.
