MANSFIELD, MASS. – Michael Kandolin (Columbia, Conn./Windham) of the New Haven men's track and field program has been selected as the Northeast 10 Conference's Sports Excellence recipient for Men's Indoor Track and Field for the 2018-19 season. In addition, Kandolin along with women's basketball senior Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) and women's track and field senior Amaysia Lake (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) have all been named to the NE10's Academic All-Conference Team for the winter season. The trio are among the 72 student-athletes honored from across all winter sports sponsored by the NE10.
Kandolin earns the fifth academic all-conference nod of his career, and his first Sport Excellence award. A finance and economics major, Kandolin holds a cumulative GPA of 3.71. Kandolin won his second career indoor NE10 title in the weight throw with a toss of 18.21 meters. Kandolin reset the school's weight throw record on multiple occasions this past indoor season, topping out at February's Last Chance Qualifier in Boston at 18.29 meters. The toss hit a NCAA provisional qualifying mark and was the top throw in the NE10 and the NCAA East Region by 20 centimeters this season. He also ranked 18th in the NE10 in the shot put (13.01m).
Kerr was one of 10 women's basketball players to be named to the academic all-conference team, marking the third consecutive season she has obtained the honor. Kerr was previously selected as the Sports Excellence winner in 2018. Kerr graduated in 2018 with her bachelor's degree in accounting with a cumulative undergrad GPA of 3.84. She is currently pursuing her masters in taxation. This season, Kerr ranked ninth in the NE10 with 15.8 points per game, eighth in rebounding (8.4) and tied for first in steals per game (3.0). She started in all 110 games over her four-year career, finishing ninth on the all-time scoring list with exactly 1,500 career points. She finished eighth all-time in rebounds with 814 and sits sixth with 346 career free throws.
Lake earns the first academic all-conference honor of her career after an indoor season where she finished third in the 60 meter hurdles, in addition to placing fourth in the long jump at the NE10 Indoor Championships. She set a new school record in the pentathlon (3,073 points) at the Elm City Challenge in December and set a new personal record in the long jump (5.59m) at the NE10 Championships. She also broke the school record in the 55m hurdles (8.36) at February's Last Chance Meet. Lake holds a cumulative GPA of 3.58 as a forensic psychology major while minoring in psychology.
To be eligible for selection to the NE10 Academic All-Conference teams, a student-athlete must have met or exceeded the following minimum requirements: started in at least half or played in at least two-thirds of the team's competitions as a significant contributor and achieved a 3.30 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
