The Lead
It has been 615 days from the last time the New Haven men's basketball program has taken the court. This season starts with two games at the CSI Tip Off Tourney, followed by an additional two road games. All four of these matchups will be played in the state of New York.
The Chargers don't play in the comfy confines of Charger Gymnasium until they're already four games deep into their season, just two days prior to Thanksgiving.
Scouting the Dolphins (0-0, 0-0 ECC)
The Dolphins finished the 2019-20 season holding a 9-16 record, five of those wins being against conference opponents. CSI visited two NE10 schools, Southern New Hampshire and Pace, both resulted in an addition to the Dolphins loss column.
This season the Dolphins can be labeled as a "young" team, with only one senior on the roster and over half being freshmen. The elder of the bunch is guard, Austin Mick who attended the College of Mount Saint Vincent and Nichols College before ending up in one of the five boroughs. Last season, Mick ranked fifth on the team in scoring with 182 points in 23 game appearances and first in three-point shooting with 42 made, an average of 4.8 per game.
Scouting the Saints (0-0, 0-0 ECC)
The D'Youville Saints are new to the East Coast Conference in NCAA Division II athletics, formerly Division III. Last season the Saints went 5-20 overall and only had one win on the road.
Eight of the 17 players comprising the 2021-22 roster are in their first year of college, making this team a young one much like the Dolphins. Returning forward, Jaeger Martino led the team last season in field goal percentage making 45.2 percent of his attempted shots. Grant Beyer, another returning forward, obtained the highest scoring average with 10.3 ppg.
Your Returning Chargers
Now graduate student, Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech), returns to the roster posing as an offensive threat. Rowland became the 37th member of the 1,000 point club in the NE10 Quarterfinals last season at Le Moyne. He also enters the season sitting 35th in all-time scoring with 1,045 career points and is currently tied for sixth place in all-time thee-point field goals made with 179 successful shots from outside the arc.
Also returning from the 2019-20 roster are:
New to the Roster
Hotaling has brought on ten new players since the 2019-20 season. Three of them have already obtained an undergraduate degree and are entering as graduate players: Devon Moore (Hanover, P.A.), Sean Smith Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart High School), and Nick Crocker (East Falmouth, M.A./Falmouth High School).
- Devon Moore (Hanover, P.A.) comes from Holy Family where he started in all 24 games in the 2019-20 season and averaged 12.8 ppg. In a stellar performance against Chestnut Hill, Moore earned a career-high of 29 points and six made three-point buckets.
- As graduate of Manhattanville, Smith started in all 25 games as a freshmen and as a sophomore. In the 2018-19 season he scored over 20 points on 14 occasions and topped 25 points seven times. He also set a program record for most points in a single game with 46 and recorded 14 double-doubles in a single season.
- As a sophomore at Bryant, Crocker started in all 27 games and ranked third on the team in terms of scoring with 10.2 ppg and second in rebounding averaging 6.5 boards per game.

Charger Ringleader
Head coach Ted Hotaling enters his 11th season strolling the sidelines alongside his Chargers. In his previous ten seasons he's grabbed 155 victories putting him second amongst the nine head coaches in program history. Hotaling came to the university in 2010, since then he has led the Chargers to back-to-back appearances in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship game, as well as eight total appearances in the conference tournament. In 2019 his roster earned a bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament, which is the third time since he started.
