The University of New Haven conquered the Southern Connecticut Owls 75-64, to ring in their first conference victory of the 2021-22 season, after dropping their past three. Next up the Chargers will face two NE10 schools in hopes to improve their 1-2 conference record. First up is the College of Saint Rose Golden Knights this Saturday, followed by American International College on Tuesday.
Inside the Series
The Chargers hold a losing record when facing the Golden Knights, 9-17. All win but one and 13 losses fall under the supervision of Hotaling. The last time these two met in February of last season, the Chargers loss column was increased by one when they fell 77-73.
Scouting the Golden Knights (4-2, 2-1 NE10)
Saint Rose are stepping onto the court Saturday coming off of back-to-back road losses to Daemen and Pace. New Haven also fell to Pace in their home-opener 69-45. However the Golden Knight's deficit was only decided by 14 points and not 24.
On average, Saint Rose puts up 85.8 points per game and allows their opponents to score 73.7. They tend to turn the ball over less than New Haven, averaging 12.8 per game, as opposed to New Haven's 14.
The Golden Knights are led by freshman Shane O'Dell who leads the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocks so far this season with 122, 44, and seven respectively. With these statistics he proves to be efficient on both the defensive and offensive ends. He put up a high of 32 points at Le Moyne earlier in the season with 12 made field goals. However, in their last game at pace, O'Dell scored in the single-digits only making 2-of-9 field goal attempts in 28 minutes of playing time.
Scouting the Chargers (4-3, 1-2 NE10)
The Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy)-Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) duo is a force to be reckoned with when they find their rhythm on the hardwood. That was the case in Wednesday nights rivalry game at Southern Connecticut. Together the two had a combined 35 points and eight assists. Lane on his own led the Chargers in points (20), rebounds (6), and assists (7).
Graduate star Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) also earned himself a season-high of 13 points, with three successful attempts from outside the arc.
The team had lost their last three games before Wednesday night, but a conference win on the floor of your cross-town rival is sure to build momentum going into Saturday's road game. At Southern, the team shot 55.1 percent from the floor - their second time this season shooting over 50 percent.
This win lifted New Haven from last place in the conference, they now sit in 11th place in front of Le Moyne, Saint Michael's and Southern Connecticut.
