After the COVID-19 pandemic lingered its way into 2022, the New Haven Chargers are hosting their New Years Day opponent, the Adelphi Panthers on a different holiday: Martin Luther King Jr. day.

Inside the Series
The last time New Haven and Adelphi met on the hardwood was right before the NE10 Conference tournament in the 2019-20 season. New Haven held a five-point advantage over the Panthers when the final buzzer sounded, however New Haven has 10 more losses than they do wins when it comes to facing this particular NE10 rival.

Ted Hotaling is 9-12 when coaching against the Panthers and he looks to grab a win on Monday before heading into his 300th appearance leading the Chargers men's basketball program when they face Saint Anselm on the road come Wednesday.

Scouting the Panthers (10-5, 5-3 NE10)
Sitting in second place above New Haven in the Southwest division of the conference, the Panthers walk into Charger Gym Monday coming off a nine-point fall to Saint Anselm. This was Adelphi's fourth loss on their own court, they prove to be a better team on the road - losing only one of their seven away games.

Adelphi is considered to be dangerous when it comes from shooting from three-point territory. They are first in the conference for total three's made with 176-of-469. New Haven is third on that list, 120-of-337.

Ronnie Silva is Adelphi's secret weapon. He leads the team in three-pointers made with 63 throughout the season so far, an average of 4.2 made per game. As a team, the Panthers average 11.7 made per game. Silva also leads the team in overall scoring with 315 total this season, an average of 21.3 points per game.

On the defensive end, the Chargers need to hold back Adonis Williams - the teams rebounding leader. He has 120 boards this season, just to preface this statistic Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), the Chargers rebounding leader, has 93 so far this season.

Scouting the Chargers (9-5, 4-4 NE10)
The Chargers head into Monday with quite a few big team accomplishments resulting from the 74-70 victory over the Skyhawks. First off, Tavin Pierre Philippe (Brooklyn, N.Y./Baldwin High School), new to the roster this year after transferring from Stony Brook, made his first official appearance in head coach, Ted Hotaling's starting five alongside Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie), Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech), Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y. /Elmont Memorial High School ). Philippe was on the court for the Blue and Gold for all but three minutes - proving to be a dramatic asset to New Haven's performance as he set a new career-high of 22 points. He went 7-for-10 from the field, 3-for-5 from three point range, and hit 5-of-7 attempts from the stripe.

On the topic of three-pointers, graduate guard Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) hit three in Saturday's contest, contributing to the ten total in the evening. Rowland remains fourth in New Haven history for three-point field goals with a whopping total of 206 throughout his career. He only needs seven more to tie former teammate Elijah Bailey (2016-20) who holds 213 in the third place spot - Rowland has done it before. Prior to the holiday break, Rowland went 7-for-10 from outside the arc.

In other news, he passed out Keith Wright for the 25th spot in all-time scoring at the University of New Haven. Rowland scored 11 points, contributing to his career total of 1,207, against Stonehill and is only 22 away from meeting Ken Coleman (1984-88) at the 24th spot.

The Chargers are third in the conference when it comes to three-point field goal percentage shooting on average 35.6%, however, they lit up the floor on Saturday connecting on 10-of-20 attempts from deep-range. They also had their best overall field goal percentage on Saturday, 52 percent, since kicking off the month of December shooting 55.1 percent at Southern.
