THE LEAD
After a short break in play, the Chargers return to action to put their undefeated record in NE10 play on the line when they head to Long Island to take on the Molloy Lions on Tuesday afternoon. The conference battle is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford, N.Y.
SERIES HISTORY VS MOLLOY
In a series that dates back to the 2018 campaign, the Chargers and Lions are knotted at two wins apiece in the all-time series. The Lions took the first two games in the set, both of which came in 2018. New Haven has won the last two meetings, by a combined margin of 11-3, including a 7-1 decision last year at DellaCamera Stadium.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (4-5, 4-0 NE10)
One of three undefeated teams in the NE10, the New Haven field hockey team proved that playing a tough non-conference schedule to open up the season pays off when they opened up Northeast-10 Conference play with wins over Saint Michael's, Pace, Franklin Pierce and AIC. Among those four wins were a pair of four-goal contests against the Setters and Ravens. In its last game against AIC last week, the Chargers came from behind against the Yellow Jackets with the game-tying goal from Kelli Jacobson (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) and graduate midfielder Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) scoring the game-winner with under two minutes remaining. On the season graduate student Sophie Schreck (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) leads the Chargers with four goals and a pair of assists for 10 points. Senior Zharria John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) follows Schreck with three goals and two assists for eight points, while sophomore Abby Nixon (Wrentham, Mass./King Phillip Regional) has a pair of assists in addition to two goals. In the cage, graduate student Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn./Branford) has started all but one game for the Chargers, collecting 63 saves to her credit and posting a pair of shutouts.
SCOUTING THE LIONS (1-7, 0-4 NE10)
Molloy enters the midweek NE10 battle looking for its first win in conference play, standing at 1-7 overall and 0-4 in league action. For the season, the Lions are being outscored by a 34-8 margin with those eight goals coming from five different players. Leading the team on the scoring front is freshman midfielder Gianna Mastrocco who has scored three of the eight goals, while sophomore forward Devin Harkins is the only other player to score multiple goals with a pair. In goal, Mollou has utilized three different goalies, with Fianna Festa playing five games and Kelsey Price playing four. The pair has combined for 80 total saves, while Ally Saigh has played one game and made 15 saves.
ONE SHINING MOMENT
Graduate midfielder Sophie Screck capped off a six-point week that came on two goals and two assists with the Chargers first NE10 honor of the season as she picked up NE10 Player of the Week distinction as announced by the league office. Schreck opened up the week assisting on one of the goals in a 4-3 win over the Pace Setters. She then followed that up with a pair of goals and an assist against Franklin Pierce, helping her team to remain undefeated in the NE10 at 3-0. With her two goals and two assists this week, Schreck now leads the Chargers with four goals and 10 points.
THE SCHEDULE
The New Haven field hockey team will play an 18-game schedule in 2022 with seven of those games to take place at the friendly confines of Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. The Chargers will spend nearly the full month of September away from home, playing their first five games on the road before making their home field debut on September 27 against Pace. That home opener is the first of three straight at DellaCamera for the Charger, the last of which is the fifth and final non-conference game against East Stroudsburg. Overall, New Haven will play 13 conference games with the top eight teams following the regular season advancing to the NE10 Championship which will begin on Tuesday, November 15.
