WHAT'S ON TAP
With just two games remaining before the Chargers go on a holiday break, New Haven returns to Northeast-10 play to close out the first part of their schedule, beginning with a trip to the shores of Lake Champlain for a date with the Saint Michael's Purple Knights on Saturday.
SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
Defense wins games! It has been a yearly goal to hold opponents to a low scoring output and this year is no different as the Chargers enter Saturday limiting their opponents to just 61.7 points per game, fifth best in the NE10. On the flip side, New Haven enters Saturday as the No. 1 offense in the Northeast-10 averaging 72.4 points per game, just shy of a point higher than Assumption, one of two teams currently undefeated in NE10 play. Leading those efforts is graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) who is averaging 19.3 points per game, second in the NE10, including a career-high 30 points in the season opener against Georgian Court. Her co-captain Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) has both offense and defense on her mind as she is second on the team averaging 15.9 ppg, while one of three players in the NE10 who is averaging a double double as she is pulling down a conference best 11.7 rebounds per outing. In addition, Deshaies leads all NE10 players with her 68% shooting percentage (50-of-74) with all of her points coming from inside the three-point arc. Rounding out the leading scorers for the Blue and Gold is senior point guard Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) who is averaging 11.4 ppg, while leading the team with 33 assists, with her 4.7 assists per game average the best in the conference. Defensively, it is senior guard Marigona Bacaliu (Worcester, Mass./Putnam Science Academy) who leads the team with 18 steals, while New Haven has 66 on the year and has turned the 123 turnovers they have forced into 129 points, including 28 alone against Franklin Pierce.
SCOUTING SAINT MICHAEL'S
One of two teams in the NE10 who has yet to pick up a conference win, Saint Michael's enters Saturday looking to break a four-game skid, all of which came in conference action. For the season, the Purple Knights are scoring an average of 51 points per game and being outscored by more than 17 points per game. They are also being outrebounded by more than seven boards per contest and turning the ball over more than 20 times per game. For the season, Saint Michael's is led by graduate hometown guard Emma MacDonough who is averaging 12.0 ppg, with just one other player averaging double figures, junior guard Paige Slaven (11.2 ppg). Slaven also leads the team in rebounding (5.7 per game), assists (12) and steals (6).
SERIES HISTORY vs SAINT MICHAEL's
·        New Haven and Saint Michael's meet for the 22nd time in the history of the two programs.
·        New Haven holds a 12-9 record in the previous 21 games, including winning the last nine straight meetings.
·        New Haven opened up the series with a 10-point victory back in February of 1983.
·        Last season, the Chargers continued their current win streak in the series with a 15-point triumph.
·        In the current nine-game win streak, New Haven has won by double figures in all but one game and that was a nine-point victory.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Holding the Purple Knights to just 35 percent shooting, while making more than 52% of their own shots, New Haven picked up its first NE10 win of the season with a 68-53 decision over the Purple Knights last January. Four different players finished in double figures for New Haven, led by Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) who closed out the game shooting 7-of-10 from the field, racking up 16 points overall. Following her was Marigona Bacaliu (Worcester, Mass./Putnam Science Academy) who came off the bench to finish with 15 points, with three of her six field goals from outside the three-point arc. Leading the Purple Knights was Nicole Anderson, whom the Purple Knights lost to graduation following the season, with 21 points.
THE BEST OF THE BEST
With her 15 first half points against Franklin Pierce on Saturday, December 3, graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community), and team captain, became the 21st player in New Haven women's basketball history to score 1,000 points, joining an elite club of Chargers. She is the first player to reach the plateau since Micah Wormack did in 2020. At her current rate of 21.0 ppg, DeBose could quickly climb the all-time scoring list and graduate among the top-10 in program history. With 1,017 points heading into tonight's game, DeBose can move into 20th all-time with just five points against the Purple Knights.
NEXT TIME OUT
The Chargers will close out the first portion of their 2022-23 schedule on Wednesday night when they host currently undefeated Assumption Greyhounds at Charger Gymnasium. Heading into this week, Assumption was ranked No. 17 in the nation in the WBCA Coaches Poll, currently standing at 7-0 on the season, including 3-0 in the NE10. Tip-off from Charger Gymnasium is slated for 5:30 p.m. with all of the action available live on the Charger Sports Network on NE10 NOW.
