The battle of the undefeated: New Haven hosts No. 3 Adelphi on Tuesday at Kathy Zolad Stadium. Both Northeast-10 teams have won all four of their total contests, taking home one conference win a piece.
Inside the Series
New Haven's history with Adelphi runs deep, dating back to Mar. 30, 2002. Overall, the Chargers have fell to the Panthers 25 times, in their total 27 meetings. Their most victory was in Garden City last season 8-7. Second half goals from Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) and Mary Rishmany (Tiverton, R.I./Bishop Stang) solidified the one-goal victory.
In part two of the 2021 season, Adelphi was seeking revenge and ultimately handed the Chargers their final loss of the regular season, 6-18.
Scouting the Panthers (4-0, 1-0 NE10)
Adelphi started their season being ranked eleventh in the 2022 ILWomen/IWLCA Division II Preseason Poll, but after getting their season going and taking out the first seeded UIndy Crimson Hawks, they have bumped up to the third spot.
On Saturday, the Panthers had their season debut at home against the Southern New Hampshire Penmen. Adelphi outshot SNHU 41-11 with only 14 turnovers. At halftime, the Panthers lead by four but then they came out to score ten goals in the third quarter, and eventually putting away the Penmen 22-7.
Kerrin Heuser, junior midfielder, paved the way to victory on Saturday with four goals on a total of seven shots. She opened her 2022 season at Georgian Court with four goals as well, and then sprinkled in-between their first and most recent matchup she scored three over the span of two contests. Right now, she is Adelphi's leading scorer but only one goal behind her is Izzy Grant.
Grant, who went .750 last game scoring three goals on four shots, tallies ten goals so far this season. She is a fifth year attack/midfielder combo who played at the College of Holy Cross from 2018 to 2021. With the Crusaders she put 54 goals in the back of the net while grabbing 22 ground balls over the course of 43 games.
Scouting the Chargers (4-0, 1-0 NE10)
New Haven has had a stellar start to their season. They walk into Tuesday nights matchup undefeated with a total of four victories. They started off with three contests on the road visiting Jefferson, Georgian Court, and IUP followed by their first NE10 game in their home opener this past Saturday.
Over the last four, the Chargers have outscored their opponents 53-37 and average 13.3 goals per contest. Three ladies have scored in the double digits: Raegan Bailey (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire), Marina Skelly (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot), and Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire). Bailey, a freshman attacker, leads with 16 but right behind her is Skelly, who lead the team in scoring and assists last season.
Cameryn Antler (Hebron, Conn./Mercy), junior attacker, saved the day on Saturday scoring a career high three goals on just three shots - a perfect game to say the least. At Jefferson she scored once, then at Georgian Court twice. After going without a goal at Indiana, she came out ready to fight in the Chargers home opener to score a career high three goals.
Franklin Pierce was very aggressive towards the net on Saturday, but goalkeeper Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) performed phenomenally. She had 31 shots aimed her way, allowing 11 goals to score. Between the pipes she had 18 saves, a career high. This is her third consecutive contest with at least 10 saves.
