Running Jumping and Throwing in the Rain

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – After competing in Myrtle Beach a week ago the New Haven Men's Track and field team had a slightly shorter drive this time to go and compete at the Wesleyan Swanson Invitational Meet at Wesleyan College in Middletown Connecticut. The blue and gold placed in five events winning two events led by Kevin Leach-Brown (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) and Cole Parker (Severn, MD/Annapolis Area Christian School).

In the sand pit, Cole Parker (Severn, MD/Annapolis Area Christian School) jumped into a first place finish beating the closest competitor by .08m. Parker opened up the event jumping 6.59m which on its own would finish him in first place as the second place winning jump was 6.58m. He would follow that first jump up with a 6.37m jump before on his very last jump clearing his previous best jump soaring to 6.66m on his final jump in the finals securing the first place finish in the event for Parker.

On the track Kevin Leach-Brown (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) took home first in the 400m. Switching the attention from the infield and the field events Leach-Brown took control in the event winning the event by over a second when he finished his lap in an even 50 seconds, as the second place competitor crossed in (51.39), securing the win for the blue and gold.

Back in the field, the arms of the Chargers continued to be strong as Russel Kobierecki finished second in shot put. After opening up with a throw of 11.39m, Kobierecki found a new strength on his second through crushing his previous mark and jumping into second with a mark of 13.48m. That throw would also move Kobierecki to the finals where he would almost match that throw with a mark of 13.45m on his first throw in the finals. Kobierecki's prelim throw of 13.48m would move him into second place where he would finish in the event.

One throw was all that Carlos Rivera () needed in the hammer throw to earn him a second place finish in the event. Just before the rain came down in Middletown, Rivera opened up the event with a toss of 43.64m which would jump him all the way into first after only one throw through the order. That throw would hold until the finals where he would narrowly be beat out for first place but be too much for the third place thrower finishing Rivera in second place riding the success of his opening throw for the event.

With the return of meets in the Northeast, the Men's track team now wraps up the month of March and moves to April where they will be competing ahead of the Conference Championships at the start of May. The team returns to competition next week traveling to New Jersey to compete at The College of New Jersey Invitational meet on Saturday April 2nd.
