With only six games remaining in the regular season for Charger women's lacrosse, the time has come for the duel between both New Haven programs: the University of New Haven and Southern Connecticut State University.Ā
Inside the SeriesĀ
The long awaited, crosstown rivalryĀ matchup is finally here! The Southern Connecticut-New Haven series is going on its 20-year anniversary, with the first ever meeting of the two schoolsĀ dating back to March of 2002 when the Chargers shutdown the Owls 13-0.Ā
In their first five seasons of competition, 2002-06, New Haven dropped two of their six contests. These two losses at the start of their relationship have been the only two in the two decades of competition. Going back, 14 seasons to 2007, the Blue and Gold have been on a 15-game winning streak. Since their last loss in 2006, New Haven averages 18.3 goals per game when on the same field as their New Haven counterparts. On the flip side, since Southern's last victory to the Chargers, they average 6.7 goals per game. Twelve of the past 15 contests, the Chargers defense has held Southern to 12 single digit scoring games.Ā
Scouting the Owls (3-7, 2-5 NE10)
Southern Connecticut is three spots from last in the NE10. So far into the month of April, they've gone 0-3 taking losses over Franklin Pierce, Adelphi, and Southern New Hampshire. Prior to that, they ended the month of march with back-to-back home victories, their first since the start of March against Post. All three of the Owls victories have been at Jess Dow Field,Ā Ā and that's where the two New Haven schools will face off on Wednesday.Ā
The Bayleigh Takacs and Karlie Rowe duo seem to be leading the Owls. Takacs leads the team in scoring, sitting at 26 goals, and is very aggressive shooting towards the net, 60 shots on the season. Rowe leads the team in points, as she has 25 goals and ten assists on the season.Ā
In the past three meetings encountered by the Owls, Takacs and Rowe both alternated scoring team highs to help lessen the deficits sitting between them and their opponents. At Franklin Pierce the two combined for nine of the Owls 11 goals, at Adelphi they each scored three times making up six of ten goals, and finally this past Saturday at SNHU, Takacs added two to the total five goals scored.Ā
Scouting the Chargers (7-4, 3-4 NE10)
Marina Skelly (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) scored her 100th goal in a blue and gold uniform this past weekend at American International College. The Chargers took a 19-6 victory adding a conference win to their record, as they now carry three. Skelly scored seven and now has 102 to her name. She is first in the conference in shots attempted, 80, and sits behind teammate Raegan Bailey (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) in terms of goals this season with 34. Bailey herself has 37.Ā
Skelly was one of eight Chargers that scored goals in the defeat over the Yellow Jackets, and it was a game of many firsts! Lindsey Belmonte (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) and Ivanna Hernandez (Bay Shore, N.Y./Brentwood) scored their first collegiate goals, while Leah Davis (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) scored her first of the 2022 season.Ā
Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) faced 23 shots on Saturday, in a game that featured eight saves. In terms of standings in the NE10, Buscemi has the highest number of saves of any goalkeeper in the conference, 122. She also sits third with a 48.8 percent on saves.Ā
