On Tuesday night, the University of New Haven women's lacrosse program improved their conference record to 5-5 after upsetting the No. 18 Assumption Greyhounds on their visit to West Haven.
Raegan Bailey (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) was given the ball, after already scoring five goals throughout the game. With 3:57 remaining and a scoreboard that read 15-15, Bailey found the back of the net. Defense was key in the final few minutes as the Chargers held the Greyhounds without a goal to pull off a 16-15 victory.
Inside the Series
Since 2008, the New Haven Chargers have been on a massive fourteen-game win streak when facing the Saint Anselm Hawks. The series between the two schools started in a different light for the Blue and Gold. In their first-ever meeting in West Haven, New Haven suffered a 17-goal loss after only putting up one in their column. From then up until the start of the Chargers streak, they went 2-4 with their first win against Saint A's being in extra minutes.
Their most recent meeting was in New Hampshire in the 2019 season. In this event, Mackenzie Reh, who was a senior at the time recorded five points on three goals and two assists which put her at 106 points on the season to set a program record for most points in a single season.
Scouting the Hawks (7-5, 5-4 NE10)
Saint Anselm started their season on a great foot, going 6-1 for their first seven contests. Once March hit, they lost four straight but come to West Haven off their first victory in two weeks, a 12-10 decision against Franklin Pierce.
Junior, midfielder Lexi Palmisano leads the Hawks in scoring this season. The Massachusetts native has scored 40 goals this season, four came this past week in their win over the Ravens which snapped a four game losing streak. Next in line for goals scored are Jenna Balboni and Jess Sullivan who both have slipped 29 shots pass the opposing goalkeeper. Balboni leads the team in points with 47, from those 29 goals and 18 assists. Annie Richards is the conferences third assist-leader, helping out on 32 goals this season.
Saint Anselm ranks eighth in the NE10 in terms of goals scored per game, 13.42. They are just one spot above New Haven in this particular category. When it comes to the amount of shots the team has attempted, they are towards the bottom of the list amongst the 14 NE10 schools. In just 12 contests they have made 334 shots, averaging 27.8 per game.
Scouting the Chargers (9-5, 5-5 NE10)
New Haven enters their senior day game coming off a win over the No. 18 Assumption Greyhounds. Bailey led the way to the Chargers victory scoring the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in the final quarter. She remains the teams leader in goals, 49, and points, 54, in this 2022 campaign. Not only does she lead New Haven in goals scored on the season, but she also sits at the top of the list in the entire conference.
This win evened out New Haven's conference record to 5-5. Similar to Saint Anselm, the Blue and Gold started off strong going 4-0 in their first three weeks of play. In their next 10 games, they went a split 5-5 which included a massive upset as they knocked off the No. 5 Le Moyne Dolphins 14-13.
