WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – After splitting their opening weekend of competition, the New Haven women's volleyball team takes off and heads down to the sunshine state to compete in the Hyatt Place Bash at the Beach hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic, the third team the Chargers will play in the tournament. The Chargers will take to the court against Barton, Lynn, Palm Beach Atlantic and St. Cloud State in the tournament.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
Opening up their season the Chargers were in New York for four games against Queens and I-95 rival Bridgeport both who they beat on their first day of action to start the season. On their second day, the blue and gold dropped a pair of tough matches against Charleston and Molloy to move to 2-2 on the year. After the first weekend, Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) has taken charge leading the way with 59 kills followed by freshman Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) with 41 kills in just her four matches wearing the blue and gold. Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) and Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) have emerged as the facilitators for the team with 74 and 73 assists. On the defensive side, it is freshman Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) leading the team with 10 blocks at the net. The team continues to be road warriors and look to pick up key wins in the middle of the road stand to open up their season.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Barton enters the matchup with the Chargers three games into their season posting a 1-2 record. The Bulldogs, similar to the Chargers, opened their season on the road at a tournament and now travel to Florida to continue their start to the 2022 season. This the first matchup between these two schools in program history to open up the tournament. The Bulldogs are led by sophomore Lily Haaga who has 26 kills in her nine sets of action on the season. On the defensive side Allison Gambill leads the way with 28 digs through the first three matches. With the opening match of the tournament, the Chargers and Bulldogs tip off at 11:00 a.m on Friday.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING KNIGHTS
Lynn so far on the year has posted a perfect 3-0 record to start the year having lost only one set so far. This the first matchup between these two schools in program history. The matchup will be the Chargers second contest of the day where it will be Lynn's opener and will play their second later in the night. The Fighting Knights in their last match against Augusta were led by Nadia Linder with 10 kills, a service ace and six digs. On the defensive side Marin Black led with 14 digs. The Chargers and Fighting Knights tip off at 4:30 p.m on Friday.
SCOUTING THE SAILFISH
The hosts for the tournament, Palm Beach Atlantic enter the tournament coming off their first loss of the season in their last match to move them to 3-1. This the first matchup between these two schools in program history. The Sailfish open up against St. Cloud State on Friday before taking on the Chargers in the first match of the day on Saturday. Abbie Zylstra leads the offense with 41 kills. The Sailfish defend at the net with two players, Anna Gregerson and Kaileigh Ammons, who have nine blocks each and another two with six blocks. The Chargers and Sailfish take to the court on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
St. Cloud State and the Chargers will play the final game of the tournament on Saturday with the two teams meeting for the very first time in either program's history. The Huskies enter with a perfect 4-0 record as they travel to Florida. The Huskies have been led by Kenzie Foley with 61 kills to lead the offense followed by Phebie Rossi with 39. Rossi has been a key defender of the net with 19 blocks to the up front with Keely Kurshner averaging 5.31 digs per set with a total of 69. The Chargers and Huskies take to the court with a scheduled start time of 3:30 p.m on Saturday.
