THE LEAD
After an extended break, the New Haven field hockey team returns to the field to face another ranked opponent as the Chargers head to Worcester to take on the Assumption Greyhounds on Wednesday under the lights at Brain Kelly Field. The non-conference battle is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
SERIES HISTORY VS ASSUMPTION
New Haven and Assumption meet for the seventh time in the all-time series, with the Greyhounds holding a perfect 6-0 record in those meetings. The first meeting between the two squads came in 2017 with the two squads meeting twice each in 2018 and 2019. Last season, the Chargers dropped a 1-0 decision to the Greyhounds, the lowest scoring contest in the all-time series. Overall, New Haven has been held off of the scoreboard against Assumption, with the Greyhounds outscoring New Haven 20-0 in the first six meetings.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (0-3, 0-0 NE10)
New Haven enters Wednesday night's game after a 10-day break between games after three road games at Adelphi and then a pair in Pennsylvania against Bloomsburg and West Chester. The Blue and Gold are still searching for their first win of the season as they face a third ranked team in the first four games of the year. For the season, New Haven has net three goals, with senior Zharria John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) scoring two of the three with both of her tallies starting as penalty corners. The final Charger goal came from graduate student Sophie Schreck (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) as she connected with Abby Nixon (Wrentham, Mass./King Phillip Regional). On the opposite end of the field, second year graduate student Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn./Branford) has continued her success from last season, racking up 25 saves in the first three games. Overall, New Haven continues its 2022 season after completing its most successful season in program history, closing out 2021 with a 10-10 overall record and a 9-5 record in NE10 action, earning the programs first ever bid to the NE10 Championship and defeating Bentley in the quarterfinal round.
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS (1-2, 0-0 PSAC)
Ranked as the No. 9 team in the nation in the latest coaches poll released by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, the Greyhounds enter Wednesday night winners of their last two, evening their overall record at 2-2 on the season. Included in those two wins was a 2-1 win over No. 8 Bentley. Overall for the season, Assumption has scored six goals with those tallies coming from four different players. Two of the four goal scorers have each scored twice; Mia Salah and Elle Murray. Of the two, Salah leads all scorers with five points, adding an assist to her credit. In the cage, graduate student Kylie Gargiulo has played every minute, collecting 30 saves combined through the first four games.
THE SCHEDULE
The New Haven field hockey team will play an 18-game schedule in 2022 with seven of those games to take place at the friendly confines of Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. The Chargers will spend nearly the full month of September away from home, playing their first five games on the road before making their home field debut on September 27 against Pace. That home opener is the first of three straight at DellaCamera for the Charger, the last of which is the fifth and final non-conference game against East Stroudsburg. Overall, New Haven will play 13 conference games with the top eight teams following the regular season advancing to the NE10 Championship which will begin on Tuesday, November 15.
