THE LEAD
It's time to shift gears for the New Haven field hockey team as the Chargers conclude a five-game season-opening road stretch with their Northeast-10 Conference opener on Saturday afternoon in The Green Mountain State with a date against the Saint Michael's Purple Knights. The NE10 opener is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. at Duffy Field.
SERIES HISTORY VS SAINT MICHAEL'S
New Haven and Saint Michael's meet for the fourth time in the all-time series, with the Chargers holding a 2-1 edge in the previous three match-ups. After dropping a 5-0 decision in the series opener in 2018, New Haven has won the last two meetings, including the first a 2-1 overtime walk-off victory in 2019 and a 3-0 shutout last season in West Haven.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (0-4, 0-0 NE10)
New Haven enters its NE10 opener looking for their first win of the season after facing a trio of ranked teams in the first four games of the year. Most recently, the Chargers dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 9 Assumption on Wednesday night in Worcester with sophomore transfer Johannah Lee (State College, Pa./State College Area) netting her first goal for the Blue and Gold against the Greyhounds. Overall for the season, Lee is one of four Chargers to have their shots find the back of the cage with senior Zharria John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) leading all players with a pair of tallies. In addition to her and Lee, graduate student Sophia Schreck has also scored one goal. Another graduate student, Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) leads the team with a pair of assists. In the cage, graduate goalie Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn./Branford) has played every minute, collecting 29 saves to her credit.
SCOUTING THE PURPLE KNIGHTS (1-2, 0-0 PSAC)
Saint Michael's also enters Saturday match-up in search of their first victory, dropping decisions to Kutztown, Mansfield, Southern New Hampshire and Saint Anselm. For the season, the Purple Knights are being outscored 23-2, including a 10-0 loss to Kutztown and an 8-0 loss to Saint Anselm. The two goals for Saint Michael's have come from different players with sophomore Rees Lord and junior Bridgie Loughlin each finding the back of the cage once. In goal, a pair of keepers have split time evenly between the pipes with sophomore Riley O'Connor and junior Courtney Watt each playing 120 minutes. Between the pair, Watt leads the way with 33 saves in her two games, while O'Connor has 19.
THE SCHEDULE
The New Haven field hockey team will play an 18-game schedule in 2022 with seven of those games to take place at the friendly confines of Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. The Chargers will spend nearly the full month of September away from home, playing their first five games on the road before making their home field debut on September 27 against Pace. That home opener is the first of three straight at DellaCamera for the Charger, the last of which is the fifth and final non-conference game against East Stroudsburg. Overall, New Haven will play 13 conference games with the top eight teams following the regular season advancing to the NE10 Championship which will begin on Tuesday, November 15.
CHARGERS SIXTH IN NE10 COACHES POLL
Following its most successful season in program history, the University of New Haven field hockey team has been picked to finish sixth in the 2022 Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Chargers received 105 points, the most they have earned in the preseason poll, keeping them inside of the top-10 for the second straight season. Assumption earned the top billing, scoring 10 of the 14 possible first place points for a total of 165 points. Saint Anselm and Bentley follow to close out the top-three, with Saint Anselm earning the remaining first place votes and 154 points and Bentley third with 140 points.  Rounding out the top-five was Adelphi with 134 points and Pace with 127 points.
